Soon after arriving to The College at Brockport, State University of New York, I heard some discussion about incorporating student blogs within classes. This semester I am leading our Environmental Science and Biology senior capstone course and thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to incorporate blogging as part of the curriculum.
Blogging is also a new concept for me. My original impression of blogs stems from when they started becoming popular as alternatives to mainstream news reports in the late 1990s. My recollection was that many early blogs were bias and so I never considered them seriously. Blogs are now mainstream sources of information and entertainment, ranging from slanted opinions, reviews, forum-like discussions, to biological facts and many topics in-between.
I believe in leadership by example and so I will be blogging along with my students this semester on global environmental issues. As an entomologist and ecologist, my focus will be on arthropods.
