Racism's Impact on Education

            In the article “With Black Students, Some Schools Are More Ready to Punish Than Help” by Piazadora Footman, illustrates some problems regarding race is schools. It states that there are inequalities between some races, where, for example, Black children get punished instead of helped when in need of extra help. The author goes on to explain why she states her argument. Her son Xavier started to act up in school and was constantly being punished at school. She questioned why and came to the conclusion that it was partially the schools fault by not giving her son the help he needed, instead they would punish him and his behavior would only get worst. She claims that in some schools children of color are not treated the same. She went on to transfer her son into a new school where his behavior changed. Her son would show signs of joy with the right support towards his studies. Xavier was now excited to do homework, passing his work and even made the honor roll. The author wanted to make change, in school with harsh punishment and to improve teaching in school with mixed ethnicities. She states that children should “be taught with love and understanding” to get better results in schools. She also claims that too many children of color at young ages get punished and would like to make change by collaborating with other parents to stand up for their children instead of feeling guilty for their children’s behavior.


            The author does a good job in showing the issue and her argument is clear. I have to say I agree with the author that many children of color get punishment more often than others. I know this by experience. Being a child of color in an all white elementary school, I must say my homeroom was the principal’s office. I don’t remember a day where I wasn’t in the principal’s office and every French class I would get in some type of trouble. My behavior was not always the best after being sent to the principal’s office many times. I started to kick my friends and those who made jokes about me I would beat up. My parents never transferred me to another school but when I did go to high school I never had that problem. When I got into high school, I do know my behavior changed, I was usually very happy and got better grades. Just my experience goes to show that the author’s argument is true. In a lot of places that have little variety in ethnicity, those who are of different cultures should not get any type of different treatment, whether it be extra attention or punishment, neither should be permitted by teachers. In relation to this, which was shown in the research article ***, is that children change their sociological and psychological behaviors when others do not accept their presents. I mean that maybe children know that racism exist, they can see it all over and most know the consequences, like shown in the documentary *** we saw in class. Also, parents of children who are punished due to unfairness should stand up not only for their children but for others too because it is people like Footman who make a change. Finally, I would like to add that it’s not only children of color who have this problem, but that many children are sometimes over punished. Those who need extra help in school should also be directly assigned help and not be pushed aside, like shown the documentary A Class Divided where some children were not aloud extra help because they were of different eye color. Race is unfair and is not something many choose to be part of. Especially, children should not be punished due to their color of skin.
