The person who I believe made a huge difference in the world of technology is Jimmy Wales. Jimmy Wales is one of the main founders of Wikipedia. He also founded the Wikimedia Foundation which encourages the widespread of knowledge through several fields of media. The websites they work on include Wikitionary, Wikinews, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, Wikispecies, Commons, Wikidata, and MediaWiki.
Jimmy Wales was born on August 7, 1966. His most renowned website is Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that contains over three million English entries. This website can be edited by anyone and allows people around the world to educate themselves. All of Wales’ websites are non-profit organizations aiming to widespread knowledge of problems of the past, present and future. Everything is free, making knowledge easily obtainable as well as free from restrictions. Wikipedia was the first to share universal knowledge at such a large scale and this was Wales’ main goal. He wanted everyone to have the chance to learn from his websites. Most of his websites are run by volunteers. Without them, these websites will cease to exist since they are the ones who add content to the websites. I would love to do something similar to Jimmy Wales. He is inspirational to all website creators. He is the first man to actually decide to make knowledge about everything and anything free! I plan to learn how to create a website over the summer and hopefully create a website dedicated to informing people about the news. I also plan to create an account on Wikipedia so that I would be able to edited the entries and scan them for accuracy. This work would help keep everyone informed of the world and its problems.
Jimmy Wales is also big on the protection of privacy. In an article titled “This spying bill is against privacy and democracy. And it won't work” posted on The Guardian on September 9, 2013, Jimmy Wales opposes a British bill that would allow police the right to spy on and literally anyone. I have written many articles on the protection of privacy and this is the first time I saw an article where Jimmy Wales is mentioned. A similar case is shown in the article titled “Wikipedia founder hails extradition deal with US and calls for law reform” posted on The Guardian on November 28, 2013. Jimmy Wales helped make a deal with the US government to deny extradition of a man named Richard O’Dwyer. O’Dwyer was convicted of copyright charges after he created a website which allowed users to watch movies and TV shows for free. The US wanted to bring O’Dwyer to prosecute O’Dwyer in the US but Wales convinced them otherwise and landed a deal with the UK and US courts.
Jimmy Wales is a man who wishes knowledge to be free and non-private. His goals are most prominent in his actions and creation of websites. When Wales was young, he was home schooled. His parents were poor and could not afford sending him school until eighth grade. He later went on to receive his master in finance. Though his work did not concern the internet, he spent many hours reading and coding websites during his leisure. His curiosity is what allowed him to create Wikipedia as well as protect the rights of privacy. I hope that one day, I would be able to do something as great as him.
