I recently found a text, written by Nina Berman, an American documentary photographer as well as an associate professor at Columbia University, called « The victims of fake news ». I read this article on the Columbia Journalism Review website, which is an American magazine, published at a frequency of two editions per year since 1961 by the Columbia University Graduate School of journalism. This magazine treats about news, media industry trends, analysis, professional ethics and the stories behind news. The article that I chose talks about the people that suffers from fake news and how they try to deal with it on a daily basis. In the text, Ms. Berman introduce us to the concept of « fake news » by writing about the 1938 hoax called « The war of the Worlds », which was pretty much the first viral fake news and how it affected people all across the USA. The author then published five interviews she made with five persons that are not related and how they lived and dealt with the fake news about them or their relatives. In my opinion, her text was great to display how hard it can be to deal with them toxic news for the most parts. I also think that this text is credible because of the backgrounds of the author, which is quite famous, and an award-winning woman, and the magazine, which is from Columbia University and has been around for a long time. To conclude, I think that this exercise was great because it really showed me a new perspective about fake news.
