I strongly agree with Emmanuel Jal, I believe education is the key to help people in poverty. Giving food or goods to places like Sudan is a temporary solution to a permanent problem, as he said people need tools to create themselves the life and the revolution Sudan needs, and i firmly believe that education is the main tool to help people build a future for themselves.
Emma Mccune is brave, has a caring heart and is altruistic. It is obvious that helping people is her greatest pleasure in life. This is what motivated her to help an innocent helpless child; to free him from his years as a child soldier and eternal misery. Little by little, people like Mccune are trying to help as much as they can to end war in general, and she has done her part which is saving a life.
I believe that some people have the need to make a difference in the world. Emma McCune was one of them. Her sensibility towards the child soldiers' situation was her motivation. She probably felt that she had to do something in order to give them a chance of a better life. They were born in a war environment and they were used to kill people. Saving some of them was her way of fighting this war.
When a war child make it to adulthood, it have many repercussions. A child that was taking at a young age to learn violence and to kill people, will only know that. Therefore, when he will be face with a problem later on, he will solve his problems with what he knows: violence. Also, since he was fighting a war during the period he was supposed to go to school, he miss on the time where you can learn the most. In the future, his education will be less than the other children, or he would even never go to school.
The documentary showed several gruesome images of the events that took place in Sudan. Were you aware of the problems that are/were occurring in Africa? Why do you think that the media does not focus on these issues?
Motivation, for people like Emma Mccune, just come from who she is. She wanted these children to have a better life; a life that did not include war. McCune could not stand knowing these children would grow up in war. Her compassion is probably what motivated her the most. It also helped that she could travel to physically help.
I think that people like Emma McCune, who save strangers' lives thousands of miles away from their home, are people who are more sensitive towards war children. They imagine how it would feel like if this war child would be a loved one and how they would do anything to save them from their misery. As Emmanuel sang in his video, there are more Emma's out there, but not everyone could afford to travel thousands of miles to physically demonstrate their emotions.
I think that those two forms of art allow people to express their profound emotions and thoughts freely. The performance that Emmanuel Jal made, for instance, allow him to deliver his story in a way where he can feel heard by others and he is able to accept his past to seek forward. Moreover, music and poetry create images that allow other people to rely and feel the situation being told. For Jal, music was like a therapy that has a powerful impact on his mind, soul and spirit. Music allowed him to get over is past as a child soldier since this form of art makes people happy. Thus, this way to transmit a message is, for Jal and surely for many others, inspiring and delivering.
Frankly, yes, I believe his view is correct. In my current Sociology of Education class, we've actually been discussing things very, very similar over the past week. Education is the key to getting people in poor conditions into better ones and allowing them to make progress for themselves, fend for themselves, etcetera. So long as it is done properly and the education is not undermined, it can allow a population to truly grow and flourish. It deserves attention, focus, and care.
If I ever was in a situation where I had no access to food, food that we would normally eat everyday and are used to, I would not turn to cannibalism as I could never have the interest to eat another human being as it makes me disgusted. I would search for anything else to eat in the wild that we would not eat on a day to day business. Mind you, there are people who get desperate for meet especially when food is scarce and therefore turn to cannibalism, but I could never do that. It makes me sick thinking about it.
