In 1977, Rita and Doug Swan, both Christian Scientists, did not believe in modern medicine, thinking that having “faith in God” was the only necessary “medical treatment”. According to them, being ill was an illusion, so instead of bringing Matthew, their sixteen months old baby who suffered from severe fevers, to the hospital, they paid a Christian Science practitioner to do some prayers for their baby. The practitioner told the parents that the fevers were caused by fear, and that the baby would recover with the prayers.

To begin with, the article I chose is named “UK scientists ready to genetically modify human embryos” written by Ian Sample in The Guardian online newspaper. Furthermore, this article explains that some scientists in the UK want to get approval to genetically modify human embryos to enhance the research on miscarriages and to understand it better which will maybe help find the true causes behind it. This could lead to genetically editing embryos in the future to reduce miscarriages.

Euthanasia still causes great debate in today’s society. Euthanasia occurs when a patient intentionally wants to end their life because they are suffering, ill or have a chronic disease that they can no longer stand living with. As of 2015, Canada has ruled in favor of doctor-assisted suicide for certain cases. In earlier years, patients had only one option; to continue living. Now, patients are indirectly asked if they wish to live or die.
