I care about the topic of drug-free treatment for mental illness because I strongly believe that it should be encouraged around the world. I’ve seen people in my life that are close to me suffer from mental disorders and the horrible side effects they had to go through while taking pharmaceuticals and visiting doctors every week. I care about it even more than I did before because I know a lot more about it now. In order to get my results, I read and analyzed specific chapters from 3 different novels that I found the most relevant to my topic.

If you’re reading this, I am assuming you’re interested in mental health. If so, I have posted many news articles about individuals whose mental health was at risk. I began researching and posting mainly on children who are victims of sexual abuse. For example, click here for a link to my post about a child that was sexually victimized by her middle school teacher.

The problem of concussions in sports relates to me since I used to play hockey and soccer at a high level and I’ve witnessed some players who suffered a concussion after a big hit to the head. The essay entitled "Concussions in Sports: A Serious Issue in Mental Health Research" will be using scientific research to present the importance of this issue. The articles I used in this essay were all found using academic search premier which is a database where you can find peer-reviewed articles coming from academic journals.

The issue in the news that I’ve been writing about and plan to do my essay on is the stigma around mental health, how drug-free treatment (such as counseling and group therapy) is more effective than pharmaceutical treatment, and how these two topics have a connection. Some of the news stories that I’ve summarized that really caught my attention and inspired me to dig deeper was the story of Alain Magloire, a mentally ill homeless man who was shot and killed by police as well as the story of the 20 year-old Sasha Menu Courey who was raped by three of her fellow classmates.

Many student-athletes endure concussions every year and many of them act like they were just normal knocks to the head. Although in many cases that is true, the other side of the spectrum is that many concussions leave athletes with brain injuries or may even cause death. The awareness of concussions needs to improve and schools need to implement precautions to cut down on the amount of concussions received each and every year.

The interim report of the Charbonneau Commission has finally been released. However, the content of this report wasn’t really what everybody was expecting. The report contained a well carefully written document with just a little new information instead of a list of recommendations to fight corruption. This was really surprising for observers since the Parti Québécois was clear in what he wanted to see in that report.
