John Vidal writes in the “The Guardian” about how microplastics should be banned to save the world’s oceans. A group of MP’s on the United Kingdom’s Environmental Audit Committee address the microplastics problem and the need for microbeads to be banned. Microplastics are tiny fragments of plastic found in the ocean due to the breaking down of larger plastic debris, small synthetic fibres from clothing, or microbeads used in cosmetics.

The number of heroin overdoses have been rising quickly over the last few months. In Erie County, NY there were almost 600 opiate overdose deaths by April of 2016 this includes heroin and prescription opiates such as morphine, oxycodone, and methadone. There was 39% increase in heroin related deaths in 2012-2013. This number has continued to rise; Opiate overdoses have doubled in the last year all over the country. Officials are saying that the country is facing a heroin epidemic.

In the article “Shock figures to reveal deadly toll of global air pollution” the Guardian reports that the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a health warning about deadly levels of air pollution.The high levels of smog are appearing in cities with high population growth, and is created by mix of transport fumes, construction dust, toxic gases from power generation and wood burning in homes.

The Ontario Government has canceled 3.8 billion dollars in their plan to further its investments in green energy, including solar, wind, and biofuel energy. The main argument to cancel the plan has to do with the rising hydro prices in Ontario, which has been paying for green energy investments, creating a surplus of energy in Ontario.

            The Ring of Fire is an enormous mineral deposit 500km from Thunder Bay, Ontario. It is known as “the next oil sands” of Canada, mostly for its abundance in the mineral chromite which the main ingredient in stainless steel. Since its discovery in 2010, the provincial government and select mining companies have been collaborating to make it a reality. The problem is that mining has still not begun mining.
