For about two months now, I have been writing a lot about homelessness in Canada. In fact, this particular social issue caught my attention at first as it affects hundred of thousands of Canadians every year, and a lot more around the world. Moreover, I felt homelessness was an important issue as it can affect anybody. In fact, anybody can become homeless at one point in his or her life, which I believe makes it a social issue that needs addressing.

The organisation that I volunteered for is called Centre St-Vincent-de-Paul.  For nearly forty years, this organisation has been selling second hand furniture to families and people who do not have the financial luxury to pay for top price merchandise. With the help of kind-hearted and devoted volunteers, the organisation’s goal is to collect donations from people, and sell it at affordable prices.

In fact, according to an article that appeared in the Gazette last month written by Charlie Fidelman, the Montreal Health and Social Services Agency have decided to not go on with a “housing first” model, stating that it is “not their mandate”.

Many American citizens lack to realize that homelessness is not a choice and that many people believe that they are homeless for their own reasons. New York City, a few years back, instituted a homelessness prevention program named “Homebase,” essentially to help homeless individuals and families get back on their feet and provide some aid.  Researchers Sarena Goodman, Peter Messeri, and Brendan O’Flaherty, decided to address the question on whether prevention programs like Homebase impact the length of time the homeless, specifically homeless families, spend in shelters (2014).  Through record data analysis, the researchers gathered statistics concerning family size, number of children, and length of shelter spells.  They found that H

I have decided a couple weeks ago that homelessness was a social issue I wanted to talk about because it is a very an issue that can be seen almost everywhere and it can happen to about anyone. In order to deepen my understanding on this particular issue, I think it is the best idea for me to volunteer in an organization that is dedicated to this cause. The particular organization I will be volunteering for is the Old Brewery Mission in Montreal.

Homelessness is a major social problem that often gets overlooked. It includes many factors such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, uncertain physical and mental health, addictions, and community and family breakdowns. To be homeless means to live without any type of shelter. In today’s world, people are acting out to the problem more by running food shelters and homes for people who aren’t as fortunate as others. To decrease homelessness there needs to be an increase in education.

It is well known that there are homeless people in every major city. Often those itinerants are involved in violent situations that break down for various reasons. One of those reasons (also one of the most commons) is substance abuse. In fact, I found two stories that happened in Montreal and in New York that are about violent behaviour due to substance abuse of homeless people.

Life is not easy for those who are different. In Russia, the government has recently adopted laws that prohibit any form of homosexual propaganda. Elton John, the famous singer, considers that those legislations are an attack towards gay rights. And although Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, argues that they do not harm anyone, John says that he met people in Moscow who are constantly harassed and even physically harmed by vigilante groups.

Censorship is to delete or hide information, opinions or expressions made by the government or any other authority that had control over its circulation. In a democracy, this phenomenon occurs when the information or other goes against a powerful social structure such as government and religious institutions. Nowadays, censorship can be seen as a violation of human rights, like freedom of speech. Although, in open societies, there is less of a debate regarding this subject because many will argue that censorship is sometimes needed in order to assure national security like in time of war.

As parents or students we have to choose a school where we want to study and often it is a complicated choice. The main question is: is it better to go to private or to public school? In the article, the author compares school under six categories. One of these categories is enriching course. In private school, they can afford more advanced course or program because they have more resources. Also, private institutions are more selective. Because of these criteria they can reject some students such as students who have lower grade, so they can have smaller classes.
