In the article “Childhood depression may increase risk of heart disease by teen years” by the University of South Florida (USF Health), a recent study done by Jonathan Rottenberg, Professor of Psychology, shows that children with depression are more likely to have heart diseases early on. The Science Daily articles states that it was an already known fact that depression is linked with heart problems for adults.

In the Academic Journal Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health, Shan Jin, Nazeem Muharjarine, Jennifer Cushon and Hyun J. Lim wrote an article on March 1, 2013 named “Factors Associated with Childhood Depression in Saskatoon Students: A Multilevel Analysis”. They chose to investigate the whys behind childhood depression because most adults nowadays affected by depression have most likely suffered from mild to high level depression as children.

            Race, being a human social construct to put people in categories because of one’s characteristics and traits, is an important factor when determining who to interact with. In Interracial and Intraracial Contact, School Level Diversity, and Change in Racial Identity Status Among African American Adolescents, Yip, Seaton, & Sellers (2010) performed a study with 224 African American adolescents over a 3 year period in school level diversity. This research mainly shows how interaction can change a person’s view on another’s racial identity.

Obesity in children has been called an epidemic now that attention has been drawn to it. With the rise in childhood obesity it can increase the number of adults that are overweight as well. The health problems that people develop over time due to obesity can be very serious if nothing is changed. According to the journal, child obesity needs to be assessed right away so that the kids can use prevention or intervention programs (Obese parents—obese children?). A parents diet plan can affect a child’s weight development although early weaning promotes gaining weight.

In today’s society, we’ve grown accustomed to embrace differences, from cultural to geographical differences we learn and embrace new things every day. However, when we think of athletes the general image is of someone who is fierce, determined, and willing to do anything to win. Why would that thought or image changes once an athlete openly says that he/she is gay?
