Every day we read little messages to one another in short, fast spinnets, but chances are we didn't realize we were re-wiring the way our brains learn.  The human brain is extremely adaptable. Because we can train it to function best by recieving quick, incomplete sentences, and fast answers, we are promoting short attention spans and the need for fast answers. After I read the following article by Nicholas Carr on how our means of daily communication and learning is actually making us stupid, I immediately related.

In this case, published in the Journal of Advance Nursing in 1998, there is a woman named Susan that does not value her life anymore and wants to die. Before judging, here is a little back ground on Susan. Susan is 27 years old lawyer, well-traveled and liked skiing. She was engaged to a man named John. One day they ended up in a car crash. John died but Susan survived but became paralyzed from the neck down. Susan spent many months assessing her situation and decided it was worthless. She could not do anything and at that point was just wasting resources.

The news article I chose for this assignment is titled “Fresh Doubts Over a Texas Execution” by Maurice Possley on August 3, 2014. This article, which was published in The Washington Post, covers the story of a man named Cameron Todd Willingham who was sentenced to the death penalty in 2004 for the alleged murders of his three young daughters in 1991. In the article, Possley writes that Willingham was with his daughters when his house suddenly caught fire.

Fitting in is a key desire for most people today, however it appears that there is an extra pressure on men to conform to certain ideals in order to be accepted by their peers and ultimately fit in. When these ideals are not met in the desirable fashion they are often victim of severe criticism from men as well as from women. The ideals I am talking about can be described as a box, or as what is popularly referred too as the “man box”.
