One of the planet’s largest ecosystems is brewing in controversy: is manmade pollution impacting the oceans?  Recent studies have shown that marine degradation is rapidly accelerating with thousands of tons of waste such as sewage, oil, chemicals, and mostly plastic, entering the oceans every day creating trash vortexes. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest of all and spans from Japan to the West Coast of the United States.

For this second blog post, I chose a short documentary by VICE INTL on the world of illegal blast-fishing in Montenegro, explaining the social, economic and environmental causes and effects of an undeniably destructive trade. In spite of this fact, it is perfectly understandable why fishermen resort to blast-fishing methods. In an interview with an anonymous blast-fisherman, or nobelite, they stated that using just 3-4 blast caps (with 50-60g of dynamite each) secures about 300-400 kilos of fish and a profit of €1500.

But, the company has recently decided to break this gender stereotype by signing a new model with a beauty contract. This person is not a celebrity, nor a female.

With Halloween season coming up, many are anxious to decide what they will dress up as this year. Among mythical creatures like fairies and werewolves, we can find some more realistic costumes that represent real groups of people, such as Native Americans. While some may think that it is acceptable to dress as a tribal chief to go trick-or-treating, others believe that it is unacceptable and appalling. The Caledonian Forest has been deforested to the extent that it remains in only 35 isolated fragments compared to its original expanse of 1.5 million hectares.
