On October 7th, 2016, The Calgary Herald released a news article on its website regarding a 3-hectare oil spill in Northern Alberta. The leak occurred about 15km away from a town called Fox Creek, covering a flowing marsh area “which isn’t home to fish”. Glad that’s cleared up. The Alberta Energy Regulator is said to be investigating the extent of the environmental damage, and an emergency cleanup process has been initiated.

The article titled “Overconsumption is costing us the earth and human happiness” by Celia Cole offers an in-depth analysis of the 2007 documentary titled The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard. The documentary broke the internet explaining the truth behind the psychology of consumerism and how the United States economy became purely based on resources. Leonard describes the consumption process as a linear system that starts with extracting resources, to production, distribution, consumption and then disposal. This system has been perceived at only face value for many years.

It was clear to me after reading the comments on my previous blog post that I needed to further develop points on topics that I briefly talked about in my last post. Two commentors told me that it would be a good idea to read the articles that they posted in their comments so that I could further develop my points about the two issues. The two issues that the commentors want me to further develop my point on are Intersectionality and the mommy track. To do this I will use the articles that they provided for me to look at, as well as, one or two that I found myself.

“Easy, breezy, beautiful… CoverBoy?” This well-known slogan has been chanted by the many faces of the makeup line, CoverGirl throughout the years. Female actresses, models, singers, etc. have been plastered on various media outlets representing the face of the brand. All of the women with high defined cheekbones, perfectly lined lips, voluminous hair, long eyelashes, and a smile. But, the company has recently decided to break this gender stereotype by signing a new model with a beauty contract. This person is not a celebrity, nor a female.

It is too often that people say things like, “Oh, that’s a man’s job” or “That is a woman’s job”. How did these made up “rules” allow people to become discriminated by gender? Why should anyone limit themselves, their talents or their passions because of societal “gender rules” that have been functioning for years. I know personally what it is like to be harassed by people because of my job and my gender. I work for my father in our family business, which is auto and heavy machinery repairs, which in turn makes me a mechanic.

Canada's Great Lakes holds 20% of the worlds fresh water supply. Water is a basic right for humans and as such, Canada has taken the responsibility of ensuring not only our own country has access to safe drinking water, but also export large amounts of water to other countries who are not so fortunate to have the abundance of water that we do. The State holds a responsibility to its constituents to protect the resources and use them sustainably for future generations. The use of water has been based off stationarity which is basing management of water off past fluctuations in supply.
