One of the planet’s largest ecosystems is brewing in controversy: is manmade pollution impacting the oceans?  Recent studies have shown that marine degradation is rapidly accelerating with thousands of tons of waste such as sewage, oil, chemicals, and mostly plastic, entering the oceans every day creating trash vortexes. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest of all and spans from Japan to the West Coast of the United States.

Microbeads are plastic particles that are used in exfoliating personal care products, toothpastes, in biomedical and health science research, and it has recently been declared toxic.  Microplastics do not dissolve and they make their way into oceans, rivers and lakes where they are consumed by a variety of organisms.  It has been causing water pollution and posing environmental hazards for aquatic animals.

What exactly comes to mind when you hear the words and phrases: “Think outside the box,” “hero,” “let’s explore” and “desert adventure awaits?” Most would answer that question with words such as, daring, creative, courageous, etc. These phrases were displayed boldly on t-shirts within the boys’ section of a clothing store, symbolizing the world’s image of the stereotypical boy. An eight year old girl from the U.K. realized something was wrong when she traveled from that section of clothing to the girls’.

It is too often that people say things like, “Oh, that’s a man’s job” or “That is a woman’s job”. How did these made up “rules” allow people to become discriminated by gender? Why should anyone limit themselves, their talents or their passions because of societal “gender rules” that have been functioning for years. I know personally what it is like to be harassed by people because of my job and my gender. I work for my father in our family business, which is auto and heavy machinery repairs, which in turn makes me a mechanic.

Carbon emission is one of the biggest contributors to environmental impacts. Not only is it polluting our land and air but also our water, especially the ocean. For the past two centuries, anthropogenic carbon emission has been increasing constantly and studies show that approximately one-third is absorbed by the ocean. When carbon dioxide touches the surface of the ocean it dissolves and forms carbon acids that eventually decrease the pH level in the Ocean which will affect diverse marine livelihoods.

The oceans are in trouble because noise is being drowned out. I recently read an article about how CO2 emissions are being rapidly absorbed by the ocean and this is increasing ocean acidification. This is causing a lot of trouble in the ocean because many ocean creatures use sound to find mates, locate the reefs and find food but ocean acidification is making this difficult. One creature is a small snapping shrimp, called pistol shrimp; they live in the coral reefs and snap their claws to communicate.
