We can all agree that Canada and India are different in many ways such as for their respective history, geographical area, culture, and much more. However, those two seemingly different countries had similar conflicts within the communities living there. In Canada, the French-Canadian nationalist movement brings up the idea that the province of Quebec should be independent from the rest of the country. The reasoning behind it is often due to cultural differences such as the language.

The Current issue with the PQ imposing the Charter of Values has caused many debates on whether or not this violates the Consitution. They say that religious preference should not be showed in their workplace. The PQ's main objective is to separate from Canada. We can relate this issue with the history of India and Pakistan.

Quebec and India share many similarities regarding nationalism including the same colonial ruler, the identity of a nation within a nation, the strong will for independence and declaration as its own governing body and cultural patriotism. Dating back towards the end of colonial period in Quebec in the late 1700s, French Canadiens followed under British rule until the Quebec Act[1] was implemented in order to accommodate Canadiens to follow their own religion and follow French civil law.

Since ages we have lived surrounded by religion, and more recently with science. Although science has grown rapidly in industrialized countries lately, religion has been hurt during that time, losing many believers. Some have tried, and still try in Quebec to suppress all images related to religion in public with the ambition to make religion disappear from our society because of their "misleading information". But are they really misleading ? We learn everything science has given us by the words of another, for example a teacher giving a class, from reading book or the internet.

Quebec has always been known for its cultural and religious diversity; housing thousands of men and women from around the world that all have different beliefs and values. Montreal alone is filled with different ethnic and religious communities who all contribute to the development of our city. To say that religion should have no role in society is absurd when living in the 21st century. It affects everyone politically, financially and socially.

Althogh being of a relatively young age, it seems that since the dawn of time religions have been the genesis of many of the worlds bloodiest conflicts. For this reason alone, I believe that each individual should practice their religious customs at home and at their place of prayer. In  a country like Canada that is composed of people from hundreds of countries and an equal amount of religious beliefs there cannot be place for all these religious beliefs in all the public assemblies.
