Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to become acquainted with a couple churches around the South Shore and in Montreal, getting a better sense of what each is doing in order to get involved with their community and with global issues. Growing up in a Christian community, I’d sometimes felt that the church was separate from the outside world. It seemed as though there was an invisible rift between the people I would see during a Sunday service and those that would sit next to me in class; sermons and worship seemingly never intersected with real-world issues.

The topic has been chosen in the view that there is a lack of information about what it is and the importance it has in society. The research done is of academic level using examples of news stories from around the globe. The findings of the research illustrate that community journalism is a tool that promotes the cohesion, freedom of expression, and organization within society.

A massive suicide bombing targeting Christians occurred on Easter Sunday in an amusement park located in the city of Lahore, Pakistan. An article published by Zarar Khan and Kathy Gannon from Global News called “Death toll rises to 70 after Easter bombing in Pakistan”, reports that a Taliban group in support of the Islamic State was responsible for the event that occurred Monday, March 28th 2016. Upon investigation, it has been declared that the intent of the extremist group was to eliminate the Christian crowd celebrating Easter festivities at the park.

The Purple Hope Project is a non-profitable and a non-governmental organization who aim to improve the security and health of individuals who starve on a daily basis around Montreal by supplying them with free meals to satisfy their crave for food.  The organization’s purpose is to treat those in need with a great deal of respect and compassion, as they are often those who have been rejected by others and by their own family members.

A female student at Dawson College was refused entrance in a rollerblading palladium in Brossard on January 19, 2016 as she was wearing a headscarf on her head for religious purposes. A regular male customer of the palladium approached the young adult, Hoda Mady, and informed her that any sort of hat was not to be worn inside the palladium, as it is an item that can be hazardous to the other individuals on the roller rink.

A male traveller who was journeying from Halifax to Toronto on Thursday, January 21 2013 was refused boarding the aircraft as he was carrying prescribed leaf marijuana for medical purposes in his baggage.   Michael Korchak, a twenty five year old passenger, was travelling through Air Canada to Toronto to reunite with his family in Burlington just in time for Christmas. Due to strict travel policies, the gate agent at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport did not permit the traveller to carry the prescribed marijuana as it contradicted the airport’s policy.

From time to time, we see something so shocking and awful that we wonder what our generation has become. We see a million things, from stories we hear to events that happen that are outrageous. Well this week a new app on itunes and google play targeting little girls was created. The purpose of this app was to perform plastic surgery on models. This created a major wake up call to multiple people across the world.
