From January 19th to January 21st 2017, in Berlin, the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture shed light on the on-going water scarcity crisis, and on the importance of acting now. The theme of the yearly Forum was ‘’Agriculture and Water – Key to Feeding the World’’.

Is there enough water in the Athabasca River?

The Athabasca River has supplied oil industries with water for many decades. The article “Oilsands may face severe water shortages, Athabasca River study” by Emily Chung from CBC News, discusses the arising issue that the water levels in the Athabasca River are depleting due to the oil industry’s level of water use. To produce one barrel of crude oil, over three barrels of fresh water is needed.

Around half of the United States is in the midst of a drought, some places it is very severe, which will have serious detrimental effects on the business, agriculture and wildlife across the country. Grace Wyler a writer for Business Insider wrote an article discussing the drought and how it may be more severe than previously thought based off a study done by the Columbia University Water Center.
