Last Thursday, Robin Camp, a Canadian judge who gained popularity last year when he asked a sexual assault victim why she could not just keep her “knees together”, resigned from Federal Court. It was a rare event in the Canadian justice system and was followed by the release of a report from the Judicial Council which demanded him to be fired. The report described that “[the] judge’s misconduct was manifestly serious and reflected a sustained pattern of beliefs of a particularly deplorable kind”. In addition, it was just the beginning of what came to be many episodes and many cases which... [+] Read more
11th February 2015, a group of teenagers apparently having nothing to do chose to fill up that loss of time by pushing themselves on snowbanks. Just for fun they said. Well Chris Chafe, 18 years old, challenged his friends to push him down the snowbank in front of a coming bus. Results, he is not here anymore to talk about it. I'm still trying to find out what went through their minds. How can people have fun pushing other people in the street? We could have expected kids from elementary school to have such thoughts, but in this case the "victim" who would also be guilty, was 18 years old. I... [+] Read more
Henry Mcdonald’s article: “Racism in Northern Ireland: ‘They called our children monkeys’” discusses a mixed-race couple’s struggle to integrate themselves into a catholic, working-class area near Belfast, and the potential reasons for why a fairly large and seemingly-growing amount of people express such a xenophobic attitude towards immigrants in their community. The couple as well as their kids suffered racism and bigotry from their neighbors and classmates over the 6 years they’ve lived there, ranging from hostile and racist comments on social networks and even face-to-face, to vandalism... The term hooking up is defined differently among people. Researchers say that hooking up ranges from kissing to direct intercourse between two people who aren’t dedicated to one another. Everyone has their own interpretation of this word. “hooking up” is referred to some as the activity that has no connection between the two people engaging in it. Hooking up can occur for many reasons, for one it can be the result of depression, along with emotion and difficulties in a steady relationship. Although hooking up can be “fun in the moment” it can be dangerous as well. It increases the likelihood... [+] Read more
The article by a Russian author, Will Englund, reflects on Russia’s perhaps desire to help the Syrians. It also touches on United States’ reaction towards Russia’s behavior. The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, is betting on something unsure when offering his aid to the Syrian crisis. It has been common for Putin to give his input on sure things, though this time, his success will only depend on forces out of his control.
Russia thinks about helping the Syrians by being implicated in the provision of merchandises and chemical guns. They are thinking about this idea as opposed to helping... [+] Read more
This article opened my eyes to how impossible this idea is, yet how engrained it is in a dancer’s head. Every class, we fight for the perfect balance to land triple pirouettes or jumping as high as we can, having our legs split 180 degrees, and land as soft as a feather.
I went to see the New York City Ballet, and I was completely awestruck at the performance. These ballerinas seemed to float across the stage. The idea of making every move look effortless is the driving force for every dancer to perfect a move or routine. At that moment, you aren’t thinking about how much hard work was... [+] Read more
