Family Dynamics Can Lead to Addiction
Recent findings have shown that family social factors can lead to addiction in families. In a recent study, there were findings that adolescents with a overbearing mother who coddles, spoils or favors one adolescent over their other siblings are more likely to be come an addict then the other children in the family. Similarly, an adolescent who had an alcoholic, absent, hostile or controlling father has a higher risk of becoming an addict than an adolescent that has the opposite type of father. In a New York Times article titled "Having A Great Detox" by Ruth La Ferla, she talks about the life of addicted celebrities and there "vacation rehabs". The famous celebs such as, Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Tarra Connor (former Miss USA), Marc Jacobs, Mick Tyson, and Charlie Sheen (just to name a few), have apparently "upped" there superstar status because of the mere fact that they are drug addicts (La Ferla,2007). Drug addiction is a growing epidemic in America. In fact, our generation is known as the Rx generation because we rely heavily on prescriptions and many people are starting to get addicted to them. You can hardly turn on the news without hearing about pharmacies that have been robbed, drug busts, the newest “popular drug”, a shooting due to drug activity, and the list goes on.
