Social Media websites like myspace, facebook, and twitter have become increasingly popular within the last ten years. People use these sites to communicate with friends, family, and even to promote businesses. There is a substantial amount of advantages to social media sites. These include the ability to access news easily, communicate easily, and to be updated on national events quickly. However, along with the increase of social media websites; comes the increase of cyber bullying. What is cyber bullying? Cyber bullying is when someone is tormented, harassed, threatened, embarrassed, or humiliated by another person using social media, computers, and mobile phones. Kids and teens have the ability to bully “behind the scenes.” Cyber bullying can lead to depression, anxiety, fear, eating disorders, cutting, and in some cases suicide. The United States government has even proposed a bill on cyber bullying, and school districts are taking this issue very seriously because cyber bullying has become a major issue and increasingly popular. Why cyber bully? Most kids and teens cyber bully because they need a way to take out anger and frustration, or they are bored and have too much time of their hands. Cyber bullying can start as young as second grade, and continue through middle school. Cyber bullying is a major issue that needs more attention. Organizations have been formed to increase awareness and effectiveness in putting an end to cyber bullying. Celebrities have even joined the cause, through commercials, interviews, and social media sites such as twitter. Cyber bullying is destructive and needs to be put to an end.
