North Korea not giving in to the United States

According to an article from The New York Times by Choe Sang-Hun on May 5th, 2013, a man named Kenneth Bae was imprisoned in North Korea. They had clearly stated that he would not be released. Mainly because this is not the first time it has happened. They had tried to act "humanitarian" and released around 6 men in the past. Since America had promised it wouldn't happen again and it still did, they said they would not release this man. However, North Korea had said that they wouldn't use him as a bargaining chip. This has added a lot of tension between the US and North Korea as they are already worrying about North Korea's nuclear program.

I find this very surprising, as even though North Korea has said that Kenneth Bae has committed hostile acts towards them, is that really true? The North and the United States are in a tough spot right now, so that is completely possible. However, I don't see why the North should take such extreme measures when they have released some American prisoners in the past. Especially since they are in conflict, and they won't allow anymore from America in, it must mean that they are trying to strengthen their ground against America.
