Volunteer Opportunities Concerning Technology
by Wassim on March 26, 2013 - 1:21am
Over the past few weeks, I have researched the topic of technology and have written numerous posts concerning this topic. Technology plays a huge role in everyday life. Whether in Canada, or in third world countries, technology is always a subject of discussion. I have found five non-governmental organizations that either try to improve technology in third world countries or protect the rights of a person’s privacy concerning technology. These are the five:
- Wikimedia Foundation
- Privacy International
- NGO Technologies
The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-governmental organization that helps keep sites such as Wikipedia alive. Its core values and goals are to allow the access of ultimate knowledge to the world. They want people to be well informed of problems of the past, present and future. Through multiple types of media, Wikimedia Foundation is able to achieve its goal. Wikipedia, as we all know, is one of the most visited websites on the internet. It provides users with knowledge from people around the world. However, Wikipedia is not its only project. The Wikimedia Foundation works on websites such as Wikitionary, Wikinews, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, Wikispecies, Commons, Wikidata, and MediaWiki. Each of these websites provides its users with knowledge about literally, anything you want! Everyone and anyone are encouraged to share information on any of these sites. Wikimedia Foundation is almost completely run by volunteers. The sites are edited by users and are encouraged to share information that others do not know. These are the wonders of the web. The Wikimedia Foundation was founded in 2003 in the State of Florida. Since its creation, it has supported all projects mentioned above. Thus, no project has ever been finished because of the abundance of knowledge out in the world!

Privacy International is a non-governmental organization aimed to defend the rights of privacy for every human being, protect humans from surveillance and other invasions into a human’s private life. Whether it is by the government or by corporations, Privacy International is there to defend you! They value equality, fairness, and diversity. They do not discriminate between races, skin color, religion, nationality, etc. They want everyone to have the same rights. Their vision cannot be said in any other words than this… “Our vision is a world in which privacy is protected by governments, respected by corporations and cherished by individuals”. There are three major projects the organization is currently active in; Global Surveillance Monitor, Big Brother Inc., and Privacy in the Developing. All these projects are aimed at bettering privacy and finding out if a government or a company is disobeying the rights of individual privacy. I have sent an email to Privacy International and they have asked for my CV and a covering letter. Meaning that they must find out what I am good at before deciding on what volunteer work that they deem good for me. I will come back with additional information when and if the organization emails me back. Privacy International have achieved multiple projects such as DNA databases, ID policies, Policy laundering, SWIFT, and Communications data.

PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health), is a non-governmental organization aimed to provide third world countries with solutions to health issues through the use of technological advancements. They value health and good, healthy lifestyles. Their mission is to improve the overall health and allow third world countries the opportunity to have decent healthcare, all by using technology. Technology is an amazing tool! They have been involved in numerous projects that are both in progress or have been achieved. For the full list, click here: http://www.path.org/our-work/project-index.php! I have sent an email asking if there were any volunteer opportunities. Unfortunately, they have yet to email me back. If they do email me back, I will return and update this post but for now, I consider this organization either inactive or they do not know what to do with volunteers. The organization was created in 1995 and it would be a shame for it to be inactive. It was also in the list for the 100 best NGO’s of 2012.

Ushahidi is a non-governmental organization aimed at “developing free and open source software for information collection, visualization and interactive mapping”. Their main value is knowledge. By offering these software programs, people from around the world are able to spread their knowledge and stories through the use of technology. Though there are not specific projects, they try to change the flow of knowledge by offering software programs such as Crowd Map and Swift River. I have sent an email asking if there were any volunteer opportunities. Unfortunately, they have yet to email me back. If they do email me back, I will return and update this post but for now, I consider this organization either inactive or they do not know what to do with volunteers. The organization has only been active since 2008 and it would be a shame for an organization so young to die out. It was in the list for the 100 best NGO’s of 2012 as well.
The organization does not provide any address, email address, or phone number to contact them. The only way is through the site by using their contacting software.
NGO Technologies is a non-profit organizations aimed to aid other NGOs in the world of technology. This organization is quite different from other NGOs, since it wishes to help other NGOs with their goals. However, I applaud them because they know that not everyone is talented in the art of computer programming and technological aspects of running a NGO. Their value is to be generous and helpful to the most amount of people as possible. Currently, this organization is aiding the NGOs Save the Weavers and Impulse4Humanity. They have also recently installed Biogas plants in India. . I have sent an email to NGO Technologies and they have asked me questions concerning what I can offer in terms of technology, if I can get any funding to further their projects, how did I find about their cause and why I am interested. I will come back with additional information when and if the organization emails me back. The last events that they have done were Rhythm in 2012, a dance show, and the BMANA conference in 2011, which is a conference concerning NGOs operating in Bangladesh.
