Teens losing sight of what's important at crucial times

Two teenagers face charges after kidnapping an elderly couple according to an article by the Montreal Gazette on February 17th, 2013. The couple had been taken at gunpoint at their cottage on Saturday. The thieves had tied them up and taken them into their car. After a 2 hour drive, they got out and left the couple alone in the car. They had managed to escape and had sought out help from a passing driver. Luckily, the two had only received light injuries.
The fact that some teenagers would do this and then give up half way shocks me. They were only in their late 60s and early 70s. Although, what surprised me the most was what came at the end of the article, after one of them had gotten caught, the other one turned himself in. Why would anyone even attempt theft or an act that goes against the law if you know you won't hold out until the end. They have gained nothing at all from what they have done, except for getting arrested and life time guilt for the sin they have committed.
