The article I had the pleasure of reading indicates a growing problem caused by our current surroundings and the human race’s evolution. In fact, our ancestors spent most of their time in the outdoors and with the large presence of fresh air and natural lighting, their senses developed in a healthy way. Today, because of technology, time spent indoors by humans is significantly more than what it used to be, causing modifications to our vision.

This week, I saw a very interesting article about the DNA replications causing cancer on this website: https://www.aaas.org/news/random-errors-dna-replication-play-major-role-cancer. It contains a lot of information linking random mutations in the dividing of cells, named R mutations, with different types of cancer. This article explains clearly how R mutations are made and how we can prevent them.

Our senses are undeniably of the utmost importance in our lives, since they allow us to connect not only with our environment, but also with each other. It is well-known that over centuries, human’s sight has evolved as we started living in a less primitive state. In fact, according to researchers of the 2017 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston, all three of our sight, smell and taste change depending on the environment we’re in. It was said that although sight problems are genetic, things like artificial lights and “near-work task” affect noticeably our visual acuity.

The main result of this article is that “nearly two-thirds of mutations in human cancers are attributable to random errors that occur naturally in healthy, dividing cells during DNA replication.”  Before this result, the scientific community believed a much bigger part of the DNA mutations were cause heredity or environmental source. According to one of the researcher, the implication of the R (random) mutation was underestimated he believes that their result will increase the attention given to it.

Recently, I read an article about the increase of the death rate caused by opioids in the United States. Experts consider this phenomenon as a crisis that is mostly due to the use of heroin and fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic drug mostly made in China that is 30 to 40 times more powerful than heroin. This drug is not meant for human consumption but for pain reliever on big animals and this is why it causes so many death.

An earthquake is considered as a violent and sudden shaking of the ground. It destroys everything in the area and greatly damages the infrastructure of buildings. For the most part, thousands of lives are in danger during and after its activity. Scientists created an earthquake forecasting model to reduce the damage input of this disaster. They made a research about 40 different earthquakes from all around the world and tried to construct a model from their observations.

I recently read an article of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) about an advancement in biottchnology, named: New Artificial Chromosomes Set Stage for First Complex Synthetic Genome, written by Meagan Phelan, on  March 9 2017. To summarize, it informs us that scientists of the Synthetic Yeast Genome Project (Sc2.0) are near to their goal to create a full synthetic yeast genome. In fact, they had already constructed six synthetics yeast chromosomes that represent more than one-third of yeast's entire genome.

First of all, the subject of the article is about the James Webb space telescope and his launch date who will be delayed. This telescope will be launched from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou. The plan of this space telescope is to go in the orbit of the sun. More precisely, in the second Lagrange point (L2) and what is special about this orbit is that the telescope will be able to stay in line with the earth while it is moving around the sun.

An article published the 19th of February 2017 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) titled Researchers Show “Proof of Principle” that Memories Can Be Erased described the results of researches regarding memories, after the researchers explained them at an annual meeting. Sheena Josselyn, a scientist of the physiology division at the University of Toronto in Canada focused her research on how memories are concealed in the brain. The neurons are responsible for such action and are the ones storing them inside the brain.

In last August, an unusual phenomenon has been detected in the space. What happened that day is a massive collision between two extremely dense neutron stars. It is the first detection of light coming from a gravitational wave source ever. Every single gravitational wave observed since 2015 was cause by the merger of two black holes. This kind of merge can’t be detected, because it is not producing any electromagnetic radiation, which is needed for detecting the event.

Reply to: Fake news or not?
7 months 1 week ago

To begin with, your article is very well written and well structured.
However, there is very little information being provided on the article itself, which makes it hard for me to consider if the article is reliable or not. Although the National Post, may seem like a reliable source, the author is still unknown. Therefore, the article cannot be deemed as credible because there is no background information on the author, nor any information on his educational background. For future reference it would be best to find an article with a reliable author and provide a detailed description of the article.
Here is a credited source article that confirms your article: https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/24/politics/pope-fake-news-trump/index.html

To begin with, your article is very precise and well written. I enjoyed reading contemporary issues that revolve around us young adults and teenagers and it is important for the youth to understand the serious problems about fake news.
Moreover, I believe that the article may not be so reliable because the author of this article has little information about him. The was no background information that was provided for him, nor did you provide his educational degree's that the other has. In addition, the reason why I believe this article cannot be considered as reliable is because it is known that real celebrities and famous people don't personally write what they post on social media, they have someone write it for them, that's why Twitter or Facebook can't be considered a reliable source to be credited.
However, I liked the content you provided and I think it was really well presented! For future reference it would best to provide a detailed background check on the author in order to determine his credibility. Here is an article provided for you from Global News that very well confirms your information.

While reading your article it showed me another side of fake news which I did not look at before. An article that gives you a distinct perspective on fake news will be provided in a link below, it looks at how fake news is stimulated through social media. In fact, fake news on social media is more popular that the real news articles. The fact older people are more susceptible to believing fake news can be a bigger issue than we anticipate, most young people believe when older people tell us something. If the older person is telling a younger person something they read on fake news this can be a big issue. Also, I agree with you I do believe journalists are more inclined to tell popular stories rather than truthful ones. Media is about creating the most attention in society and things that catch our attention are not always beneficial for us to read. Also, to your point about democracy, media can be a strong tool used to make people elect someone to become president. In the United States Donald trump used this to his advantage he would make a controversial political statement everyone would talk about it and he would become more popular. One point you can add to your article to provide more insight in your topic is the study done on individuals about interpreting fake news. In your article it lists a study that was done to see the influence of fake news and who is more susceptible to fake news. All in all, I really enjoyed reading your article it was good learning new things, you just need to work on the tense of verbs and everything will be good. Well written summary which I found very interesting.

Fake news can be a very interesting topic as it affects everyone in society because anyone can be influenced by it. It is interesting that Ms. Berman wrote about the "war of the worlds" as this was one of the first experiences of fake news creating many to believe a false claim. Reading things like this can be beneficial to us all so we can understand what fake news is and what is real news. One thing your article may benefit from is to provide more details on the issues occurrent in your article. There were many big stories in the articles I did not find in your summary, like the interview of victims in the Connecticut elementary shooting. This aspect gives you a different point of view about fake news, as the articles are real, conspiracy theorists trying are to blame gun control and deem these situations fake. Another aspect of public influence and fake news is when countries use media outlets to broadcast fake news to sway public opinion, more will be summarized in the link provided below. Your point on having a credible author is very important as anyone can create a website and post anything they want. throughout reading your summary of fake news it was very enlightening and well written. There are small sentence structuring issues but overall it is written very well.

I like to see your opinion after reading my text. I did not talk about the benefits that exercises have on the kids' brain and I am really glad that you brought this idea. I think it would be nice to study this case and see if it exercise has a bigger influence on the kids. Thank you for reading my text and for making a comment! (Anne-Julie P)

Thanks for the advice! In fact, I watch television in english a lot but I should definitely read more to improve my structure! You're french is good because like you told me but for my english, I can understand what you want to say easily.

Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it. I agree with you that I need to use more simple terms, but, for my defense, we have a biology class so terms like "eukaryotic" are already in our vocabulary. :-) ( It actually means with a "true" nucleus ) I also agree with the fact that I made a few mistakes, it is my biggest difficulty in the learning of English and I want to become better in the future.
