Safety Issues in India; The Delhi Human Development Report.

After the gang rape and the murder by four individuals of a young woman named Nirbhaya, which occurred in December 2012, the ‘’Delhi Human Development Report’’ (DHDR) of 2013 undoubtedly exposed the major public safety issues in Delhi, India. Since the past few years, the crime rates have escalated according to 95 % of the people involved in the survey.

The report was given to around 8 000 houses and families in the city. According to the study, the majority of the people find the issue of security in the city very frightening. Also, they believe that the safety measures provided by their government are far from acceptable. The feeling of danger is not only felt by the poor living in harsh conditions, but also by the rich and powerful people of Delhi.

The report also revealed that the major crimes the people are hearing about and are either scared of or have experienced are abduction of young children and kidnapping of young women. Most of these victims have either been murder or died in the streets after the crime was committed.

At this point, the government has no choice but to act upon this situation.  The authorities will first have to reinstate the people’s faith in their justice system which will be a hard task to accomplish since the people find the justice department unsatisfying and unstable.

I find disastrous how the situation is in India. Safety is a primary need in order for individuals to evolve in their environment. In fact, according to the Maslow Pyramid – a theory in psychology used to describe the motivational needs of human beings – safety goes right after the physiological needs, which represent the most basic level out of five. If people cannot fulfill this category, they will not be able to progress in their development. Thereby, a country in which safety is uncertain cannot lead to a stable and flourished one. In that way, how can the government not react to such an alarming social issue? The safety measures should be reevaluated and adapted to the actual needs of the population. From my perspective, if the Indian state did so, the situation would greatly improve.

I completely agree with you, Ève. Safety is a basic need and everyone should be able to feel protected and secure, regardless of their location on the globe. The violence and crime rates in India have, obviously, large impacts on the Indian population, but also on the overall economy of the country. In fact, because of these safety issues, less people chose India as a vacation destination, which affects tourism rates and therefore the country's income. Knowing that India is a very poor country, it is obvious that a higher income due to tourism would have been beneficial for the economy of the country. To conclude, I find it very worrying that such crimes are frequently committed in India, given that it is such a culturally rich destination. I truly hope that the Indian government will take action to improve this alerting situation.

This article is very eyeopening regarding safety. Safety is something that many people take for granted. When I walk to class in the morning the first thought that crosses my mind is that if it is cold outside not am I going to be raped and killed. In order for people to succeed it is important that they feel safe and secure. In an environment with so much crime and death it is impossible for people to feel safe. This kind of environment may also encourage others to participate in the crime because they do not feel safe any other way. The more people who participate in the crime, the worse the scenario becomes. It is important that the government steps in and corrects the problem before it is too late and more innocent citizens are harmed.
