Wealthy And White: A Deadly Combination For Racism?

The article “LA Clippers Owner Donald Sterling’s Racist Rant Caught On Tape: Report (UPDATES)” by Braden Goyette in The Huffington Post from April 26th, 2014 explains the racist remarks said by Donald Sterling while attending a basketball game with his girlfriend. According to an audio source that was leaked to TMZ, Donald Sterling is heard making racist comments to his girlfriend about Magic Johnson and about racial groups such as Blacks and Mexicans. The article also reveals previous lawsuits and complaints made towards him in other racial and age discriminatory scandals. These other scandals range from his team during previous years and with his tenants who reside in properties that he owns. There are also updates throughout the next few days that is documented in the article, this includes the investigation by the NBA, Sterling’s response and the punishment that was handed down to him by the league and the Board of Governors.

I was simply disgusted when I read this article, particularly when I read exactly what Donald Sterling had said. It’s obvious that he’s a racist and he’s unlikely to ever change as he has a substantial amount of wealth and is part of the white majority. This can easily be told by the fact that this wasn’t an isolated incident, we know that similar cases have been reported before. These cases date back to 2005 and there seems to be at least one case every two years which shows that he hasn’t changed his thoughts about racial minorities. It’s also not only blacks that are targeted during his rants, he also targets Hispanics as well, and as these are both minorities. Sterling being part of the white majority also shows how his rants helps his conform his power over minorities because of the assumptions he makes about them. He has yet to realize that he may in fact have more DNA relevancy with someone of a minority race and that he is basing his assumptions based on physical traits of another human. I also believe he won’t change mainly because it’s been documented for the last decade about his racist ways. Also because he continues to make these wrong assumptions of racial minorities even while own apartment complexes where the majority of tenants are African-American and from the fact that he owns a large NBA team that is also made up of mostly African-Americans. I completely agree with handing down a fine for his words but is $2.5 million enough? I don’t personally think so, either way as the NBA stated, I also agree with the fact that he has no right to continue owning the L.A Clippers. I believe that overall the article had quality facts as it contained quotes from the actual audio source and it was continually updated once new developments were made in this situation. The Huffington post itself is also a trusted source of information and provided background information with previous incidents involving Donald Sterling and racism.

First of all, let me say that your title grabbed my attention. I have heard about this issue before and I am still shocked by what had happened. Donald Sterling has committed awful comments about other "races» and he hasn't learnt his lesson. I agree with you when you say that he will not change since he has been in this situation before and he has done these racist comments more than once. I find it impressive how he can be so racist but own a basketball team where the majority of the players are black, how can that be? He shouldn't be able to coach any teams with this type of mentality. Seriously, I think with this post you have brought up an important topic about racism which is that white people who have good wealth and in a majority group think they are a in a position where they can judge and discriminate other "races". He wasn't just racist against black people but also other "races" which is disturbing because nobody has the right to be racist. I totally agree with all your points and to be honest I think you have well covered the topic. The point you made about the fact that he may have more DNA relevancy with someone of a minority race is completely true, everyone whether it is a Mexican, black or white man have similar traits in DNA and this is proven so he needs to get off his high horse and think about this. Thank you for pointing out this controversial subject.

Hello, I was unaware of this issue and your post is very interesting. Is astonishing to see how closely related to Hispanic and black people he is and still seems to see them as inferior or primitive. This specific incident seems to me to be more about jealousy and the objectification of his girlfriend as something that affect his image. It seems to be a matter of jealousy and pride, which still doesn’t take away the racist nature of it.
Two concepts we’ve seen in class that would help summarize his witness and richness is the idea of Privilege and intersectionality. Being white is a characteristic that gives him privilege in our society. By overlapping his richness and gender we have an intersectionality of Privileges.
You can find more information about intersectionality here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersectionality
