This is a short article of good quality regarding a doctor, formally of the VA and her experiences working for the institution. It is extremely relevant due to the fact that the VA has come under a fair amount of heat due to the massive amount of prescription drugs they have been giving to veterans recently. These drugs, predominantly opiates, have been the cause of massive amounts of addiction and overdose among American veterans in recent years.
This article by ABC regarding the American veterans association known as the VA describes their malpractices, which have steadily increased in the last decade. It focuses on a specific doctor who has come out with her own story in light of the recent congressional hearing on the topic. These malpractices which have stemmed from a change in direction of VA administrative authority, have involved the over dosing of veterans with four specific opiates; hydrocodone, oxycodone, methadone and morphine. The levels of these prescriptions handed out to veterans have surged by 270 percent in the past 12 years, according to data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. The article states that this far outpaced the increase in VA patients and contributed to a fatal overdose rate of nearly double the national average, the agencies own scientists found. The doctor was alegedly fired due to the fact that she was not following the new VA proticol of handing out lethal aounts of drugs to veterans suffering from a wide array of mental and physical illneses that have been the result of their experiances in the line of fire, serving their country.
While the article is short it does present pertinent information in a time when opiate addiction has become widespread throughout North America. It also provides links to other ABC articles regarding the VA and their over prescribing of medication to veterans.
