Lights Out = No More Cellphone

The use of Internet and cellphone without restrictions could be bad for children as explained in the article "Ban Cellphones, Internet Use in Children's and teenagers' bedrooms, U.S Doctors Urge Parents" from the National Post, written by Lindsey Tanner.

Teenagers take their cellphone everywhere even in bed at night, this behaviour seems to be linked with violence, cyberbullying, a higher risk of obesity and an important lack of sleep snce there is no regulations when the lights are supposed to be out. Use of cellphones after lights out are often related to explicit images being sent or to access pornography. The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that cellphones, computers and internet connections should be banned from the bedroom since they seem to enforce unrecommended behaviours in teenagers.

The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly believes that there should be a limit of time on the internet for every teenagers; it suggests two hours per day to assure teenagers of spending more time concentred on school instead of on the media. Also, they believe that awareness is still the best solution to fight these behaviours. For example, teenagers should know that over use of internet is bad for socialization and has a numbing effect. Finally, the Academy specifies that the restrictions should be based on the maturity level.



This is a very interesting topic but I am surprised that they did not consider that cellphones aren't the problem. Perhaps many of these adolescents aren't staying up because of their cellphones, instead they are staying up because of some type of sleep disorder and their cellphone is a great way to pass the time when they are unable to sleep. 20% of Americans get less than 6 hours of sleep, and sleep disorders are becoming more and more common. I can't think of any better way of spending that time staring at the ceiling, then using my phone to communicate with others and surf the web.

The light from cellphones and computers isn't really good for your eyes either. Furthermore, if you use your cellphone before sleeping, ithe light actually makes your brain think that it is sunlight and it affects your sleeping habits. It is, indeed, not a good thing to have such technology in our bedroom.
But, I don't think they should stop people from using their cellphone in their bedroom, because some people are only using them for listenning to music or to communicate with other people. I therefore think that we shouldn't abolish the use of cellphone, but we should control it.
