Exercise At All Ages

After reading this article on the Montreal Gazette tonight, I decided to re-write my news summary because I thought this one was more of a feel-good topic. The article, written by June Thompson, features a local group called the Morning Walkers have been together for 20 years on Friday. The members are all between 55 and 85 years of age and joined the group to take up a healthier lifestyle. All members enjoy the company they get from the group as well as the health benefits that come with it. One man named Mitchell says: ‘‘Not to mention, walking is the cheapest, easiest form of exercise one can do, and it can be done anywhere.’’ 

 

Which brings me to say this: If your grandparents, or anyone you know in that age range, has health problems (or just needs to get out of the house), whatever the reason, this group of walkers is perfect for them. We talk a lot about health in young kids, teens, even adults. However, we often ignore our respected elderly. 

 

The group even organizes parties for Halloween and Christmas. Your loved ones will have found a new occupation, new friends, and a healthier lifestyle for them to be around longer for many more years. The group also offers incentives for joining and participating. The more you walk, the more they give you T-shirts and other little gifts. So help them out and tell your loved ones about the group and watch them grow in popularity.

I found your article really interesting. I never thought about it, but it is true that not everybody thinks that our grandparent’s health situation can be related to the fact that they don’t do much exercises. We think that it’s normal that they aren’t active that much because they are old. For me, one of the reasons why I don’t really think about this situation is because all my grandparents are pretty active. My mother’s father is almost 80 years old and he is still skiing. My two grandmothers and my other grandfather enjoy walking a lot, even in the winter. Later on in my life, it is my goal to be at least as much active as them.

Your post is 100% spot on. We as a society spend some much time focusing on our futures that we forget how we even arrived to where we are. Our parents, grandparents, and for those lucky enough to know them great grandparents. So much emphasis is placed on our younger generations and their health (especially in recent decades with the explosion of obesity and its consequences), that we do not have enough time or resources left to pay any attention to our elderly. Studies have shown that elderly who are active and participate in some form social events are overall healthier than those who are not active. This group seems perfect for many middle age and elderly people. It gets them outside and exercising and allows them to socialize with more than just family. The giving of incentives for joining and holding parties or holiday events has me intrigued. My question is who pays for the events and the purchasing of the incentives. Do members of this walking group have to donate to join? Is there a yearly fee in order to remain a part of the group? I think this overall is a great concept for our middle age and elderly population. My husband’s grandmother (Gaga) will be 100 years old this September, and she walks 30 minutes around her apartment complex parking lot every day, unless it is raining. She still goes to church every Sunday, and has lunch with Mrs. B, her neighbor who is in her late 80’s nearly every week. She is a very active woman for being almost a century old. I think that exercise is a key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but exercise alone will not keep one healthy. I think the social connections with people create with others aids in living a healthy and happy life.

This post brings up a good point about how the elderly are often forgot about when it comes to physical activity. As we age we start to lose are strength and mobility. It is important to slow the process by maintaining a moderate physical activity level throughout a life time. If you don’t use it you lose it. Specifically with muscles, if you do not regularly use them their strength decreases. It is important for the elderly to continue to move in order to accomplish everyday tasks. I also agree with the importance of the social aspect of walking groups. Working out with other people provides external motivation to continue a physical activity plan. Walking groups provide support for the individual. Also these groups provide a place for people to come together and socialize. This is something that is often looked over in the exercise world because the meaning of exercise is transformed. Working out is more focused on maintaining activity level at an older age than improving it.

This article posts an interesting spin on the way we think about health an exercise. Mostly when we think about health, we think about ourselves as young adults and working out in places such as GYMs, studios, etc. We also think of working out as something rigorous and putting much strain on the body. This article and feedback provides a simple idea for the elderly, and anyone who is out of shape to help get back into the swing of things. In my family, I follow my parents’ influence on working out (my mom 48 and my dad 57). They both attend kickboxing and karate classes. We also have a workout room in my basement where we have both cardio and weights. But this article could definitely influence someone like my grandfather as a simple way to maintain or improve his shape, and maybe put an extra year or two onto his life. Exercising and maintaining good health also has a positive role on one’s mood and the way that person feels about their self. So not only may it extend an elder’s life, it may also simply make it more enjoyable as well.

I truly appreciate this article and the fact that it brings attention to attaining a healthy lifestyle no matter how old one is. As an exercise physiology major with a strong focus on special populations, including overweight/obese individuals and older adults, I cannot stress enough the importance of physical activity in someone’s day-to-day life. Whether someone takes the time to get themselves to the gym for an hour each day, or just parks their car a little bit further from the grocery store than usual, they are making strides to living a more healthy life. As people age they naturally lose muscle and bone mass, and these losses lead to decreased mobility, flexibility, strength and balance. Although walking and other physical activities like it cannot totally combat the effects of aging, they do help to slow the degeneration process and help people to live longer and fuller lives. Exercise has also shown to decrease the likelihood of many diseases and improves overall mood. If more groups, like the one you discussed in this article, existed, there would be a lot less incidences of disease, falls and immobility reported among the older generations.

I would like to start off by saying that this article drew my attention because of the awareness that this brings to the elderly and how the general notion in our society is mostly focused on the children. I agree with the notion that a lot of attention is placed on the younger generation and that the elderly are overlooked. I would also like to also agree with you that these elderly people need to maintain some sorts of exercise to help themselves maintain a healthy lifestyle. I know this from a personal perspective because my Grandmother and many of my elderly uncles have high blood pressure and they do not exercise at all. However, one of my uncles exercises on a daily basis and he has no high blood pressure and is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is also proven with consistent exercise throughout ones life increases their chance of living a longer life. Many elderly people encounter many health issues and exercise would definitely have a positive impact on the elderly and their life span.

This journal eliminates all doubts about the frailness of seniors and what they are actually capable of. To begin with, the word "exercise and body fitness" is mostly related to young people full of life and energy. This is because the young need to get healthy despite the activities they undergo daily.However, in this perfect picture of young people getting fit during their energetic life, seniors are excluded since people either think that they are too frail to engage in tedious workouts or too prone to dangers whenever they want to partake in activities that requires energy. This group "Morning Walkers" serves as evidence to all that the time of the seniors is not yet past and once they have life in them they can also enjoy it by partaking in activities of young people despite the fact that they are old. If working out healthily keeps us younger then we can help our seniors increase their life span by aiding them in engaging in little workouts. Quite frankly, it is very depressing when an old person is made to stay indoors doing nothing when he could be outside helping himself out. Old people do not need to be kept indoors they must also enjoy the benefits of working out as it is to we the younger generation.

The elderly should not be restricted to the confines of their own homes. What drew me to this article was the persistence of this particular generation. Today, is not like yesterday, the younger generation does not take a typical walk as seriously as they should. In fact, with the advancement of new technologies, more individuals, not just the young ones, tend to be involved with instant messaging, face book, and even text messages. If these types of groups were modified into groups that could relate to one other far as likes and dislikes, we would have more of a healthy society. For example, the face book walk group, nails and hair group, and single mothers would love reality shows walk group, etc.....

I like this article particularly because it is geared towards exercise. I believe exercise is one of the top stress relief, euphoric sensations that the body can experience. At my school on Long Island, Ny, I exercise daily and often try to get my friends to participate with me. An excuse that comes up all too often is that I don't have time or I can't do what you do. What I say to them is that everyone has time because all it takes is thirty minutes to an hour of hard work during the day. Also, I respond by saying you don't have to do what I do, you have to do what you can do. Exercise isn't straight forward across the board; exercise can be anything from walking for ten minutes to running for 10 hours. Everyone has their own methods of working out and I think this group has a great cause. When I reach the age mentioned in the post I hope to join one of these groups to stay in great shape.

The two channels that we identified would be the local nursing homes, and any senior social clubs in the area. Any other activities that the town or local government sets up for seniors in their area would be a good place to recruit.

The cost structure will vary from case to case. A specific deal will have to be struck with whatever health club is hosting the events. In an ideal case, the seniors would pay a reduced membership fee for the club or gym that would go to pay for the space being provided and for the specialized trainers. In other cases where there is not a specific space being rented out as is the case for outside excursions, a fee would be collected that would go to pay for transportation. In the case of a seminar or class being hosted at a nursing home, the nursing home would book and pay for the event.
Revenue streams:
The revenue would primarily come from the seniors taking part in the programs. In certain cases such as when a nursing home is hosting an event the revenue would come from the nursing home.

What I like about this business proposal is that it reaches more than just the gymnasiums; it's spanning across different facilities that people have access to for physical activity, providing that they pay the required membership. There's also the connection needed between senior citizens and trainers, because the more bonded, the better the effect it will be for citizens participating in the program.

One improvement I want to suggest is, because senior citizens may be occupied in their homes or apartments most of the time, should there be a way to deliver physical activity membership to the homes through trainer videos and live video chat like Skype? Even though it does add expenses, the advantage is, citizens will be able to exercise in their own homes too with the help of trainers chatting through telecommunications. They won't be able to do walking around blocks, but they should be able to get up and move to improve their health and well-being.

Cardiovascular disease is the second cause of death in Canada. After conducting a study on close to half-a-million people aged 12 years and older, they find out that there are many problems in being healthy and preventing the risk of multiple diseases. Only one out of 10 Canadians has the suggested cardiovascular health, putting emphasis on the prevention of cardiovascular disease. People should start avoiding being exposed to tobacco smoke, eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables, and do half-an-hour of exercises every single day in order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. A major goal is set to improve the cardiovascular health across many Canadians and increase the number of people with adequate cardiovascular health by 10% by 2020. As such, multiple governments will be collaborating with one another on how to improve health and lessen the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Essentially, this article can be used as one of the emphases in the business plan and what the trainers will do.
