The research problem being addressed in the article “The Effects of Profanity in Violent Video games on Players’ Hostile Expectations, Aggressive Thoughts and Feelings, and Other Responses” aims to discover the impact of the use of profanity in video games on players and aggression. This article points out that since the effects of violence in video games has already been researched multiple times, the effects of profanity in video games needs to be researched. The research was conducted by composing different questions that were related to profanity effects on aggression. The questions asked if profanity effects, hostile expectations among players, accessibility of aggressive thoughts, aggressive feelings, perceptions of physiological arousal, and enjoyment. The participants were 321 students mixed of male and female ages 18-32 at a university. They all played a video game that included the use of profanity. After they played the game they completed different questionnaires in order to find out results for each of the research questions. One main result found was that if the antagonist and protagonist in the video game used profanity, it increased the player’s hostile expectations. However, it was found that profanity did not lead to aggressive feelings in players, or arousal. So basically the study findings say that profanity in video games is not directly linked with the aggressiveness of the players but there should be further research to find out more.
The research purpose were clearly stated in the beginning of the article in saying that since the effects of violence in video games has been studied, the effects of profanity in video games should be studied. The goal was to find if there was a link between aggressive thoughts/ feelings, hostile expectations and profanity in video games. There weren’t really any related purposes to the study, only the purposes that were stated in the beginning of the article. All segments were related to the purpose, for example the previous research on video games and aggression section. This section explained what aggression is and how violence in video games affects it. This is relevant because as they said before this study is related to these past studies, they must explain to the findings of these past studied are in order to compare the findings of this study. This will help readers understand the topic more. The research purpose is very realistic and significant. At this day in age video games are at their all time high with all the advanced technology. But video games can also be very violent and include a lot of profanity. It is important to see what the effects of playing these games often will have on future generations.
