Three NFL players Kneel During Veterans Day.

Since the beginning of the 2017 NFL season, many players have either knelt, sat or raised a fist during the American National anthem. Raising controversy around the country. However with the recent celebration of Veterans Day, fewer NFL players have protested during the national anthem. The NFL player association argued and asked the players in order to honor the veterans. Even players such as, Michael Bennett, who has been protesting since the beginning stood during the anthems. However there were three players who still knelt despite the occasion. Eric Reid and Marquise Goodwin from the San Fransisco 49’s and Oliver Vernon from the New York Giants.

This has caused a lot of controversy, with the NFL facing pressure from social media. Facebook even wanted people to boycott the NFL, and stop watching the games. However there have been players who embraced and took veterans day seriously. Tennessee Titans, receiver Rishard Matthews held the hands of soldiers while entering the field and stood alongside his teammates for the first time since Donald Trump criticized players for kneeling.

The NFL player’s union had planned several tribute for veterans however some teams chose to do their own way of showing appreciation. The players on the Atlanta Falcons wore specialized helmets with the initials of a fallen member of the armed forces.

These protests started last year with former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. He started keeling during the National Anthem to bring attention to inequality and police brutality against minorities. More and more players have followed in his footsteps and have started kneeling, sitting, or raising a fist during the anthem. President Trump has recently said that players protesting should simply be fired or removed from the field. This heated things up even more. The anthem is meant to represent U.S National unity and respect for those who serve in the military, therefore any protests during the anthems are unaccepted. The president’s comments only inspire more players to kneel, while there is still no solution for these protests from NFL executives. At the moment, there is no way to resolve this national controversy. There have even been boycotts against NFL merchandise, so that people do not support these protesters.  Kaepernick remain unsigned by any team for his role in the start of these protests. He filed a complaint that he was treated unfairly and that executives colluded against him. Even though he lead the 49’ers to a Super Bowl and three Championship appearances, he remains unsigned.

I believe that people, no matter the job should be able to protest and make their voices heard. Especially when it is peaeful protesting, there shouldnt be anything wrong. Howver it is different in the USA. They are a lot more patriotic than us so I can understand, to an extent why some people are furious. There is a reason why players are protesting, and that issue should first be ackowledged then resolved.

I find your topic really interesting, I searched for a summary on this topic and I'm happy I found one.
Personally, I don't think that kneeling during the anthem on Veterans Day is appropriate. In my opinion it is disrespectful to all the soldiers and their family. Having players protesting during a day where they honor the fallen ones is selfish. I understand that the issue of racism is really important and needs to be addressed, but I do not think that the actions those three players took helped their cause.
Don't you think that the players should publicly apologies for the action they took on Veterans Day?
