To Encourage the Kneeling Protests in the NFL

After 49ers player Colin Kaepernick knelt down during the US national anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustices and police brutality, many other players and supporters have joined the wave of protest. To this day, many who are against this protest argue that it is not the place for sports players to include political issues into a game that is only there for their entertainment. Although no sanctions have been put on players who protest by kneeling during the national anthem, many people have expressed their disagreement towards the gesture.

US president Donald Trump, in the past few weeks, has expressed his anger and disappointment towards the silent protest that is going on, calling it disrespectful to the American Flag and to the national anthem itself. He presses that the behavior coming from the players is weak and out of control. Not only Trump blames the players for their protest, but he also accuses the NFL itself of not taking the necessary steps to stop it, like forcing the players to stand during the anthem.

Personally, I believe that the NFL players should definitely keep protesting for what they believe in. The fact that they are sport players does not imply that they shouldn’t take a stand on issues that matter to them and that it does imply that their opinions are less valid either. The visibility they are offered is especially why they should keep protesting since they are broadcasted all over America. I think that by protesting on a platform so big that millions of Americans see every week, the NFL players have the possibility to reach many people and make them realize that something wrong is going on in their own country regarding racism and brutality. Furthermore, the fact that sanctions might be applied to players who keep protesting in the future is very disappointing to me. I believe that people who protest in peacefulness should not be sanctioned for their actions and I personally do not see the disrespect in kneeling in front of a flag when the intent behind it is not to cause chaos and issues, but to try to denounce and resolve them. I therefore disagree with President Trump’s opinions about the kneeling protests during the national anthem and I believe he should try and resolve the actual issues instead of shaming people for standing up for what they believe in.

Do you think players who protest by kneeling during the national anthem should be reprimanded or do you encourage it?
