With more and more conflicts happening in the world today, refugees and immigration is a large factor of Canadian life. According to the author, recently the Canadian and Ontario government have put in place a new agreement in order to acquire skilled immigrants, as well as increase their chances of improving their skills and trades, to meet the province’s “occupational standards”. Up to $91 million was included in the The Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement (COIA). This is to aid fund new comers to enhance their skills for up to three years, so that they may work in Ontario. On November 24, the agreement was announced, during a ceremony with Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen, and Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Laura Albanese.

The Government said that the COIA is set to improve the integration of immigrants all the while enhancing Ontario’s economy. Which is the most prosperous province in Canada in 2017.“Ontario is the top destination for new permanent residents settling in Canada each year, typically exceeding 100,000 newcomers,” Hussen said. The COIA is also set to attract more french-speaking immigrants to Canada. Hussen also states that this agreement will create new targets and hopefully see roughly one million new permanent residents between 2018 and 2020. Laura Albanese says that immigrating is a “win-win” for Ontario and Canada itself, with the new agreement only benefiting the country even more.

The agreement helps Ontario to work better with the federal government while more and more skilled immigrants and arriving and aiding with Canada’s economy. Through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), there has been roughly 6000 candidates wishing to become permanent residents in Ontario, in 2017. This year, Ontario has met the limit for allowed immigrants, however this is said to increase starting in 2018 because of the COIA.

What makes Canada so great is that we are so open-minded and more welcoming than other countries. So immigration in a good thing for Canada, and I think it is a good thing as well. I also believe that we shouldn't  allow for too many immigrants, if in the long run, we still want Canadian Culture. However, when a country is in extreme circumstances, any person seeking refuge should be granted it. Yes, immigrations helps with the economy etc, but there is a limit to everything, immigration included. This said, I am still very proud to be Canadian because of our history of allowing new comers into the country, and our so called “multiculturalism”.
