For the time being in the class NewActivists, I have written a long post about honor killing and how it has affected women and men in both Canada and around the world. This assignment will help people who would like to study different disciplines to combat honor killing or study against honor killing. The following three disciplines can be related to Honor killing and how to fight it.
Family Studies (First Discipline)
Family Studies is a subcategory of Social Science discipline, and defined as,“ a discipline that focuses on families, the challenges they face, and how to help them meet those challenges, and improve their quality of life,” by the Mississippi University for Women. This discipline will allow the student to do research, study theories and apply them in their field of work.
Family Studies related to Honor killing because students who study this discipline will be able to prevent fights in families or they will be able to understand when something bad might happened to either the women or the men in the family. Also, Students from this Bachelor degree will be able to work in the Social Service department which will allow them to work as family preservation specialist.
Sociology (Second Discipline)
Sociology defined as,” a study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical change in whole societies. Unifying the study of these diverse subjects of study is sociology’s purpose of understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures,” by Department of Sociology at The University of North Carolina at Chapter Hill.
Sociology students can study the history of Honor Killing and when it started and related it to a specific religion that started Honor Killing in the past. Also, Sociology students can study diverse cultures and how they think about honor killing, do they agree with that despicable method or not and why they use it if they agree with it.
Gender Studies (Third Discipline)
Gender Studies defined as,” a discipline that addresses the need for a deeper understanding of women and gender in society, and students may explore a range of topics, including but not limited to everyday experiences, social and political institutions, literary and philosophical contributions, and the past and present events and issues. Students may also develop practical and policy initiatives that promote equality and social justice,” by Memorial University.
This discipline can help the students to understand the position of women in our society. Also, this discipline can help us understand why women are targeted as the victim in crimes like Honor Killing. Also, Gender Students can study the history of women and when honor killing started.
