A Drop in the Ocean: Feeding the Homeless

The news article titled “Montreal restaurant offers food to those in need, gets love in return” written by Christopher Curtis and published on December 23rd 2016 from the Montreal Gazette highlights two people who are helping those in their community in what has now become quite the story. Hashemi, who works at a currency exchange store, and Ala Amiry, a restaurant owner in Montreal, now give out free food to those in need; the homeless as well as students with no income. Hashemi noticed that almost every day there were people who came into his store asking for spare change so that they could go to the restaurant beside his store to eat and came to the decision mentioned above with Amiry, the restaurant owner. Their businesses are close to a space where many homeless people often go to, making this decision ideal for those nearby. The news article also mentions that the two are also from Iraq and have gone through many hardships in the past, such as the Gulf War, fear in the dictatorship that was present and the lack of freedom. They carry the value of giving back, which they mention is also Canada’s value. Many people pass by homeless people whether they realize it or not which means that they have access to help the homeless even in the smallest way. People become homeless due to the circumstances they are in; sometimes due to some kind of addiction to drugs, alcohol, gambling or something else. Hashemi and Amiry help those in need without asking questions that may make those coming to them feel ashamed or uncomfortable.
The Montreal Gazette is a well known newspaper that has been sold in the area for several years. This story, as well as many of their other stories, are also mentioned in various other news websites. These both prove that the article is not fake news and if someone wanted to verify that it was real they could go to the store themselves and ask the owner.
