Raising Awareness to stop Stigma Against Mental Health Issues

Throughout the whole semester my focus of my work has been surrounding the different aspects of mental health. In order to find new and creative ways to show the truth of mental health issues, I have found 2 sources of current events that have occurred within the last month. In addition, I have decided to challenge myself in creating a blog that discusses the issue of mental illnesses, featured on the site are; TedTalks, places to visit within Canada for help, photography, and much more. I created this blog to illustrate the stigma against mental health problems.

“50% of all film, TV and digital services don’t have a named or speaking Asian character” (Waurenchen, “Race” 6). Although individuals of Asian descent constitute 5.6% of the population of the United States (Wikipedia contributors), they are exceedingly underrepresented in Hollywood’s predominantly white film industry, often restricted to portray a select few roles constructed upon racial stereotypes.

Violent video games, are they worth the risk?

Popular game franchises such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto have been the source of controversies for over ten years now. Parents have long wondered what they can do to stop their kids from playing these games that feature an ever increasing quantity of violence which has been getting more realistic every year. Their fear is that prolonged exposure to guns, shooting, killing, stealing and other acts of violence in a video game can lead to similar acts of violence outside the virtual world.

Videogames: A Leisure Activity With Negative Consequences

             Playing video games is a popular activity where people resort to for fun. Video games are commonly played amongst many adolescents, are quite addictive and can be played for hours. On the other hand, video games that have violent content may come with some negative consequences if teenagers are exposed to them too much or, are addicted to playing violent video games. For instance, Call of Duty Black Ops is a violent video game played by many teenagers that may be a contributor to aggressive behaviour.

The Photoshop Effect

In an increasingly technology-oriented society, photo editing has become endemic in the media industry and is now standard practice. The use of Photoshop in advertisements and magazines remains a highly polarizing issue. Before being published in media outlets, pictures of female models or celebrities are almost always edited to enhance their beauty and presumably increase sales and viewership. Such is the case in a 2010 issue of Rolling Stones magazine, which features the half-naked Katy Perry as the cover star.

Mega-Corporations in the Skateboarding Industry

During the two past decades, Nike was able to secure its position in theskateboarding industry. It used extensive and effective advertising, sponsored some of the most recognized professionals and contests, collaborated with major brands, and went as far as knocking some of the most established ones out of business. Nike’s business strategy was clearly successful, but the reactions that it caused within the skateboarding community worldwide are also noticeable. More and more skaters are trying to support skater-owned brands, by solidarity.

Advertisement is a form of communication that allows a company to reach a target market in order to increase their revenue. Companies have included very artistic approaches in order to catch the attention of viewers to gain popularity and some have also included endorsements from celebrities in order to be more appealing to their target audience. However, advertisements cannot be as effective as companies want them to be if the message or the way in which the ad is presented become immoral.

Violence in real and virtual world

       With the development and the increasing popularity of video games in todays society, the popularization of video games that mainly contain violence has opened up the debate for the affects of the violence in video games. Similar studies about this have been conducted in the past about the affect of violent media, such as television and movies, but with the rise of popularity of video games, this gives the researches a little twist since this time, the player is in control of the aggressive acts of the main character.

Nowadays, ad agencies understand that sex sells; the problem with the concept of “sex sells” is that they are so concentrated on selling the product or service the ad may be causing body dissatisfaction to their audience. Many advertisements use body image to attract consumer, but in the end many ads have completely failed due to the agency not realizing that the message they are portraying seems more like body shaming.
