Disasters

The Shoreline Project Assignment.

Shipbreaking is a term I frankly never knew existed, I lacked knowledge on where all the old ships get dismantled and burried: Let alone the consequences of such acts. I had no perspective as of how many

different areas around the World were affected by climate change, and the video #7 describing how Shellfish are part of the endangered species, really helps put in perspective 'how much we have to lose'. It's

great to see how many organizations are currently taking part in solving this major issue.

Canada has a Gun Problem

English

The issue that is being discussed here, is the massive amounts of guns in Canada. Of course, as mentioned in the article, this country has far less guns than in America, it was said that Canada has about ten million guns therefore, about thirty-one guns per a hundred people whereas, America has about 310 million guns which gives one gun per person. Although, when discussing about gun security, it is taken into consideration that Canada is a way much safer place when compared to the United States. Even though, it does not result into less gun homicides.

Project - Rebranding of a Sustainable Business - The Best Hotel in Europe

We are students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program at College Lafleche. Throughout our course "Business English 2" we have completed 3 professional workshops wherein we evaluated real businesses and then came up with real suggestions and solutions which we might offer them if they were our clients.

For this 4th workshop, our task was to evaluate the Best Hotel in Europe, which is a not-for-profit sanctuary for refugees which operates in Greece. This refuge is situated in an old hotel which had been abandoned, and we were excited to work on this project because They are doing great work for the international community, but with the right partners, they could do even more!

Our task was to research the company and produce the following documents:

Documents:
1. A rebranding package: logo, mission statement, slogan(s) and anything else that you may think useful.
2. A list of potential parent companies and a brief description of why they may be interested, and in which capacity they may be interested (buy/sponsor/partner). This part must be as realistic as possible and include real statistics and facts.
3. A SWOT analysis for 1 of those potential partners
4. A slideshow that presents the basic concept, key details, and major advantages which will incentivize the parent company to buy/sponsor/partner with your charitable client.
5. A second slideshow which illustrates the improvements, upgrades, technology, new concepts, new product offerings that the investor can make possible.

Here is our work so far:

The Environmental Impacts of an Aquatic Oil Spill on the Heiltsuk First Nations

The Heiltsuk First Nations is continuing to suffer from the effects of an oil spill that occurred last fall along the coast of Bella Bella, B.C. The tugboat ran aground creating extensive damage to the bilge tank, causing an estimated 110,000 litres of diesel and another 2,000 litres of lubricants to be pumped out into the ocean. The aquatic spill has resulted in the contamination of Gale Pass, a sacred Heiltsuk harvesting area that is home to manila clam and other shellfish.

Wild fires Continue to Degrade California’s Air Quality

English

California is always on the front of climate change danger.  They are a coastal state that will have to deal with rising sea levels and increased coastal storms, not to mention a water crisis that will be pushed to the limits with increased drought.  Even with such complex issues, at the moment the biggest risk to human health is the air pollution caused by an increase in forest fires.

Drowning: Canada's Fishing Industry and Adaptive Management as a Life Raft

With the longest coastline in the world, Canada’s fishing industry has long been a source of food, culture and jobs for the country, with approximately 600 communities economically dependent on the industry (Johnson, 2016). However, current data is pointing to a major collapse in as many as 15 major stocks, and according to the Environment and Sustainable Development commissioner – Julie Gelfand – 12 of these stocks have no government mitigation plans in place (Johnson, 2016).

An Obituary to the Oceans

Ocean acidification is a dynamic, rapidly changing, and possible catastrophic phenomena of climate change. Weber illustrates the severity of ocean acidification in the seas of the western Arctic in their Toronto Star article, World’s first large-scale area of acidified water found in Arctic Ocean. Weber uses information and research from various climate experts including Wei-Jun Cai of the University of Delaware, and Richard Feely of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Scarcity and Water Wars: Battling for Knowledge and Treaties

English

With the increasing relevance of climate change, there are numerous changes to environmental conditions around the world. Whether it be increased natural disasters, changing temperatures, ocean acidification or water scarcity, these have connective traits which span across current governmental boundaries. In an article by the Asia Times, published October 11th, 2017, Brahma Chellaney brought to the World’s attention the power China has over water resources that flow to neighbouring countries.

Flooding's in Canada: the slow response and the cost of the damages.

English

When a flood happens today, a huge monetary cost is involved and insurance claims are usually demanded by the victims so they can start rebuilding what was lost. However, a lot of times, the government response to those insurance claims can be very long and that is a problem. On October 23rd, 2017, CBC News published an article written by Sabrina Marandola talking about a Laval woman that has been waiting since last spring to get her response from the government about her insurance claim.
