Blog question 7

Historical films can really help students learning the historical event, but if students want to deep learning that historical event, the historical films will not help much. The reason I said that is because I read an article online and it says Students who learn history by watching historically based blockbuster movies may be doomed to repeat the historical mistakes portrayed within them, suggests a new study from Washington University in St. Louis.

Blog Post #2 Q.8

The films in unit three show us that individuals who had major and minor impacts on history can shape how we understand history. We need to examine both major and minor actors in history to get a full picture. The events depicted in Goodbye Lenin!, show us how the fall of The Berlin Wall effected one family in particular while the events of Selma depict the Selma March and Bloody Sunday from the perspective of Martin Luther King. To exclude one type of perspective is to handicap ones self when examining a period. For example, The Holocaust.

A number of the films deal with issues of authorship and whose voice should be used in telling a story. Whose stories are being told in films (or a specific film) we watch in class? Who should tell these stories?

Many of the films from this course take multiple perspectives in the ways they look at historical events.  Hidden Figures looks at much Ignored African American mathematicians and how they effected the space race; Selma follows Martin Luther King Jr through the challenge of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting marches; and Waltz with Bashir follows Ari Folman through his life as a soldier in the 1982 Israel-Lebanon war and more specifically his involvement in the massacres in Sabra and Shatila.

To Encourage the Kneeling Protests in the NFL

English

After 49ers player Colin Kaepernick knelt down during the US national anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustices and police brutality, many other players and supporters have joined the wave of protest. To this day, many who are against this protest argue that it is not the place for sports players to include political issues into a game that is only there for their entertainment. Although no sanctions have been put on players who protest by kneeling during the national anthem, many people have expressed their disagreement towards the gesture.
