Genetically modified foods

Do you know the foods genetically modified? Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally, e.g. through the introduction of a gene from a different organism (World Health Organization). This is different from breed improvement. The typical GMF are potatoes, corn, rapeseed, soybeans and so on. These foods are accepted by Japanese Ministry of Health and the GMF are being distributed. Genetically modified foods have some advantages and some disadvantages, so I will explain the difference between breed improvement and genetically modified foods, and introduce some advantages and some disadvantages.

The feature of GMF is to develop good varieties by taking good points of two varieties quickly. This is different from breed improvement, because breed improvement takes longer time. For example, cross good-taste varieties and dry-resistant varieties to make new crop. In breed improvement case, completing individuals of various natures after that repeat breeding to establish as a stable species, but in genetically modified case, recombine only the necessary genes, so genetically modified can do efficient improvement. As a result, it produces good products in shorter time than breed improvement.

GMF has some advantages. First, it can save the use of toxic chemicals. For example, GMF can be made resistant to pests, so pesticides do not need to be sprayed on them (Tim, 2008). Second, it can prevent wasted crops. It means if pests cannot eat the crops, nothing goes to waste (Tim, 2008). Last, it can begin to grow foods in different conditions. For example, strawberries can be genetically engineered to grow in frosts. Other foods that grow in cold climates could be engineered to grow in hot climates (Tim, 2008).

On the other hand, GMF has some disadvantages. First, it is not clear what exactly genetically modified food is. For example, it might lead the allergy display which is ambiguous. Second, genetically modified crops may also cause a threat to the environment. If it can make crop with organic pesticide, it may harm the environment. The meaning is not a natural way to plant and cultivate crops (OCCUPY THEORY, 2014). Last, it is not enough testing. There has been very little testing and research done on genetically modified foods and longtime effects have not been discovered yet (the Next GALAXY, 2015).

In conclusion, I didn’t know the details about GMF before writing this essay. After reading some articles about it, I thought that GMF has many advantages. However, it may adversely affect people, the environment, insects and so on. It is good for human body to be able to make crop with organic pesticide, but I think that this idea is thinking about only human. I think that it is my life including good environment and so on, so we have to preserve the natural environment. For the reason, I disagree present GMF. I hope that researcher complete crop that it protects human and environment someday.

Whatever those are made by, natural food is number one. Japan is also known as a places that provides many delicious and healthy foods, so I think Japan does not need more various foods indeed. Modified foods actually are needed to some countries with different many aspect like, grounds, weather and many more. One thing should be developed more is technology in Japan because Japan already has good development in technology.
