Sustainable Happiness F17

About this class

As wealth has increased, happiness has stagnated. As with wealth, happiness is increasingly unequally distributed around the world. As we consume more, we are causing the Earth's sixth mass extinction. Can Sustainable Happiness Fall 2017 save the planet? Probably not, but hopefully it will make you a happier, more engaged member of your society.

What is a balanced life? Do you live a balanced life? Well, having a balanced life is about tasting a little bit of everything. For example, living in peace and harmony everyday. Balance comes in physical forms, emotional forms and spiritual forms. Being in a balance may mean something different to each individual. For me, having a balanced life means that I have to see my friends, maintain my relationship with my boyfriend, make time for my family and of course, being active on a regular basis.

Do animals experience happiness?   Some people do think that animals can feel emotions and some do not. They may act like they do feel happiness, but are they able to feel it? This question will be studied to be able to see more clearly.

As we all know, the end of semester is a period where students are overloaded by exams and projects so their level of stress and fatigue is high. It is hard to stay focused when you do not have enough energy and sleep. This is a period where we have a lot of things to do at the same time and it is hard to manage everything. There are many bad consequences of stress because it inhibits our ability to perform as well as we would otherwise could. Eating properly can help reduce the stress.[1]

Our main goal for our action research project was to reduce the students of Mérici's stress level due to the final exams of the semester. Stress can be a factor that reduces one's happiness, and we knew the end of the semester was a stressful time for the majority of the students. We then considered the health factor, since it can also lead to happiness: what is healthy, easy to consume in a matter of seconds, and makes others happy? That is when we came to the conclusion that the smoothies would be a wonderful idea.

As we all know, Christmas is coming really fast and this time of year can be really stressful but at the same time so beautiful, we need to spread joy and happiness around us. Some people do not have the chance to celebrate Christmas however being generous by giving some second-hand, unwanted toys or just doing a generous action for someone in need can be a good way to be happy and make others happy too.

Sustainable Happiness Portfolio: Activity 7                 Marie-Jeanne Boudreau Does money buy happiness?
It is a question that has been asked for many years now, and yet, many people do not come up with the same answers on the subject. That is mainly due to the fact that people have different views on money and on how it can be beneficial in the long run.

Many societies, especially western societies, worry more and more about animals’ rights. Animals have the right to live free from harm in many countries in Canada, but can they tell the difference? In order words, do animals have the capacity to be happy? It is important to consider if farm animals, wild animals and domestic animals can be happy and how.

Just think about people who win the lottery. In an instant, their everyday life changes completely and they might believe their well-being will change for the best. Nevertheless, certain studies demonstrate that life does not become ideal when winning the lottery. In fact, it appears that it is the contrary; people take the risk of becoming heavily indebted, plus, family and friends might start taking advantage of their wealth. Consequently, does money truly buy happiness (Norton, n.d.)?

There are all types of students circulating in the school's classes. Some studies in natural sciences to become a future doctor, some perform in a precise environment to help people in need and some change from a program to another waiting to know what passionate them. Despite the fact that every student in different, they all share a common characteristic; they pass through the famous end of session's rush. In this period, more than 45% of the students present anxiety symptoms. This sound alarming an unwealthy for a future generation.

We decided to create a Fairtrade Campus because we want to educate and create awareness on fair trade commerce. Fairtrade products ameliorate the agricultural workers’ conditions in developing countries. They do not make enough profits to have social benefits. Because of climate change, their jobs are not safe and they experience instability: they are at the mercy of the climate and of the market. When buying Fairtrade, we support a community of workers who can democratically optimise the worker’s benefits which brings them safety.

How is the product associated with happiness? The commercial includes smiling people with a good socioeconomic status, images of a ‘’good’’ life, and an uplifting song. It also shows two things that make people happy, most of the time: family and food. Coca-Cola tried to associate its products with things that usually make people happy to give the impression that everyone in the commercial is actually happy because of the bottles of coke they are all drinking. What type of happiness is portrayed?

We are students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program at College Lafleche. Throughout our course "Business English 2" we have completed 3 professional workshops wherein we evaluated real businesses and then came up with real suggestions and solutions which we might offer them if they were our clients. For this 4th workshop, our task was to evaluate the Best Hotel in Europe, which is a not-for-profit sanctuary for refugees which operates in Greece. This refuge is situated in an old hotel which had been abandoned, and we were excited to work on this project because They are doing great work for the international community, but with the right partners, they could do even more! Our task was to research the company and produce the following documents: Documents: 1. A rebranding package: logo, mission statement, slogan(s) and anything else that you may think useful. 2. A list of potential parent companies and a brief description of why they may be interested, and in which capacity they may be interested (buy/sponsor/partner). This part must be as realistic as possible and include real statistics and facts. 3. A SWOT analysis for 1 of those potential partners 4. A slideshow that presents the basic concept, key details, and major advantages which will incentivize the parent company to buy/sponsor/partner with your charitable client. 5. A second slideshow which illustrates the improvements, upgrades, technology, new concepts, new product offerings that the investor can make possible. Here is our work so far:

Recently, there was an alert in Montreal, raised by Environment Canada, regarding air quality. The air was severely affected, to a point where there was a possibility of smog. This smog is caused by an elevated level of pollution. According to Développement durable, Environnement et Lutte contre les changements climatiques, a smog is a yellowish haze from a mixture of air pollutants that limits visibility in the atmosphere.

I personally think that this question is primordial. Our generation is obsessed with money and owning things that we do not really need. It is important to indulge ourselves once in a while but it cannot be the reason why we are happy to live on earth. I experienced it. What I mean is that I myself realized that having stuff does not affect my happiness on the long-term (like it was written). What does affect myself on the long-term are my relationship with myself and towards others. These are true factors that influence our sustainable happiness.

6 months 4 weeks ago

I also believe that animals can experience happiness. For example, I think that if a dog has everything he or she needs, then other emotions can occur. Wen the dog has a home, plenty of food and attention from its owners, it can focus on something else than surviving. Great subject and an interesting one!

This project is a great way to show people that happiness has a strong link towards healthy habits. While people are sipping on their smoothie, not only the smoothie is delicious but students can take a healthy break :) Nice project!

I do agree that homelessness is a problem, and it is especially an issue that occurs in big cities such as New York City. homelessness can have a negative impact on homeless people's happiness. The society we live in nowadays grants importance to things that should not matter, such as physical appearance, and is quick to judge others based on their looks. Homeless people are often the victims of society's harsh critique, which can have a bad impact on their happiness. They see themselves through the eyes of others (looking-glass self) and probably do not have a positive image of themselves considering that they often lack basic necessities and cannot necessarily take care of their physical appearance. They are probably aware of it which automatically leads to a negative perspective of themselves.

7 months 23 hours ago

I think that it would be wrong to erase our history because it makes us who we are as a society. It is important to learn from our mistakes because we can take voluntary control to not repeat our mistakes and to learn forgiveness so that we would become better and more optimistic. Sometimes we want to forget things that happen in past to focus only on the future but sometimes it is good to learned from the mistakes we have done to become better as a human-being but also as a society.

7 months 23 hours ago

Wow, I completely agree with you! Cars have a bing impact on the health of our planet and it leads to climate change. A majority of people have a car and use it everyday, it can cause a lot of traffic and also a lot of anxiety. Running out of time make people angry and stressed and the solution that you propose is really good because public transport are a good way to reduce the trafic and at the same time it is good for the planet. Pollution is a big issue for our society and materialism is a cause because people always buy more and more and it affects the health the planet. People do not need one or two car or they do not need to change it every four years! With the media like Facebook, the radio and the TV we are exposed to materialism and it is hard to resist to affluenza.

This is a very good project. It is interesting because it also promotes sustainable happiness. Your project's goal is to improve the air quality in your school which could also potentially lead to the well-being of students as well as improving their concentration. Considering these factors, your projects also leads to higher pleasure, which comes from internal thought and cognitive effort. Adding plants to the school environment can be a great way to improve concentration and therefore cognitive effort.

7 months 23 hours ago

This seems to be a very interesting project. We often hear a lot of bad things about this issue, and creating awareness to help fix this situation is a good idea. The western society that we live in nowadays contributes to affluenza because everyone wants new clothes (or think they need new ones) and they keep buying products that are not fair trade. The workers in countries that produce these clothes live in terrible conditions and often are not paid well, and their well-being is never really considered. If people were to realize that the importance they grant to clothes that are produced in countries such as Bangladesh contributes to the workers bad conditions, it would reduce the markets of cheap labour. A reduction of that high demand in cheap clothing can only happen if people stop according that much importance to clothes.

7 months 4 days ago

This house surely makes homeless people happier, but the persons working there are probably happier also. The workers probably think they can change the lives of other persons in a good way if they use their strenghts. A person using its strengths will be true to himself/herself and will be happy in the form of hedonism.

7 months 4 days ago

I love the idea. This could reduce the need for electricity and it would also lower the bill in the long term. This really sounds great as each house would become a bit more self-sufficient and fewer externals resources would be needed. Just the fact of saving money brings a smile to many people, but if the person already has a good salary, the saved money may transform into materialism. Let's just hope the saved money is well used.

In the long term, the overall cost would be lower but the initial one is higher. This may be just enough to prevent low incomes family from acquiring this technology. I think it could help the riches to become richer...
