Sustainable Happiness F17

About this class

As wealth has increased, happiness has stagnated. As with wealth, happiness is increasingly unequally distributed around the world. As we consume more, we are causing the Earth's sixth mass extinction. Can Sustainable Happiness Fall 2017 save the planet? Probably not, but hopefully it will make you a happier, more engaged member of your society.

How is the product associated with happiness? The commercial includes smiling people with a good socioeconomic status, images of a ‘’good’’ life, and an uplifting song. It also shows two things that make people happy, most of the time: family and food. Coca-Cola tried to associate its products with things that usually make people happy to give the impression that everyone in the commercial is actually happy because of the bottles of coke they are all drinking. What type of happiness is portrayed?

In our class of sustainable happiness, Anne-Marie and I proposed a project to our school. This project consists of finding a problematic in our school that involves people who are surrounded by stress situations. After many consultations, teachers and students agreed that we do our project before the evaluation week, known as the end of the semester. This period is mainly characterized by anxiety. Studies reveal that while the end of the semester is approaching, students declared that they have a rise of stress.

As I sit here writing this, I am wearing my lucky socks. Do they actually work? Am I luckier if I am wearing them? Apparently, the answer is yes, just so long as I believe that they are indeed lucky. This is because belief can affect our cognitive processes and consequently our emotions and actions. Think of it as being very much like positive visualization. So, wearing one of my funny t-shirts, probably my "Happiness is bicycle shaped" one, can make me happy.

Recently, there was an alert in Montreal, raised by Environment Canada, regarding air quality. The air was severely affected, to a point where there was a possibility of smog. This smog is caused by an elevated level of pollution. According to Développement durable, Environnement et Lutte contre les changements climatiques, a smog is a yellowish haze from a mixture of air pollutants that limits visibility in the atmosphere.

Recycle & Reuse   What is our goal?   Our goal for this project is to make use and profit out of plastics that would have cost us money otherwise.   Why are we pursuing this goal?   We are pursuing this goal because it is much eco-friendlier to make use of what was already processed than to send it who knows where. Also, so much recycling is wasted when food or other such products are thrown into the recycling bin. This is leads to being able to reuse so much less materials.

By: Charles Martel, Sofiya Taver and Anthony Patulli The issue chosen is e-waste pollution, the environmental damages caused by electronic debris. About 20 to 50 million tons of e-waste is generated every year throught the world with a significant portion of it being exported to UK shores and China to be recuperated and transformed. This crude and long process leaves time for persistent and harmful pollutants to be released continuously from the these large heaps of heavy metals, leaving many areas unbreathable.

Environmental Issue Our project is aimed at eliminating incorrect sorting of waste in cities. More specifically, its goal is to diminish the use of garbage cans as the universal waste bins and instead, encourage people to recycle and compost as often as they can. Solution Our approach to this problem is to fabricate stickers that we will put on municipal garbage cans all over Saint-Lambert and that will make people reflect on whether or not what they are disposing of belongs in the trash.

Geothermal is a kind of renewable energy that comes from the Earth’s internal heat. How does it work? Water runs through the pipes, goes all around the house and finally comes back in the soil. Water comes from deep in the ground. This water has been heated in the Earth by the natural temperature in the ground.  After, the water comes back in the house to heat the house. During the summer, it is the same concept except that the water that comes from the soil is cooler than the temperature in the house. In fact, this action can cool the temperature in the house.

Matthew Hill, Umrick Singh & Luka Guenette-Larocque Solar Water Heaters   As seen in the movie "Seeking the Current", solar water heaters are part of our future in terms of heating our homes. It is where energy from the sun is converted into heat to warm water using a solar thermal collector (solar pannels). Solar water heating began in 1980 and is today mostly used in China, Japan, India, and all over Europe.

Domestic waste is a huge environmental issue all around the world, but according to an article by Radio-Canada called, “Où produit-on le plus de déchets? La réponse en carte” (2016), Canada is one of the countries that produces the most domestic waste per person per day. The worldwide average of waste per person per day is of 1.2kg (which is already huge), and Canada is way above that average according to the map attached to this article.

Since the past centuries, many animals have gone extinct. Today, we are facing an alarming extinction of pollinators, especially of the honeybee population. The consequences of this extinction are very significant to human survival since they play an essential role in our food chain. Honeybees are the main actors responsible for the pollination of our flowers, fruits and vegetables. The majority of human food crops that supply the world's nutrition are pollinated by bees.

In an article on sciencing, John Newton (2017) explains that the space needed to create a landfill site destroys the homes of many species, as well as pollutes the water in the ground and the quality of the soil around the site. Not to mention the degradation of the health of those who lives near those sites. Plus, he explains how it generates methane gas which is a known greenhouse gas that does more damage to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. In other words, it can exponentially speed up climate change.

In Mont-Saint-Hilaire, an important urban environmental issue is the lack of incentive parking which discourages people to take public transport, in particular buses. According to CITVR, they are only two main incentive parking lots in Mont-Saint-Hilaire. However, one of them, the biggest, which counts 837 places, is almost only used by people taking the train. The remaining places are used for intern taxi-buses: they are almost not used by any citizens.

It is an original project to do as your main goal is to fund the Go Green and using magic to attract people is great! On the other hand, how will you do this magic show? Will you invite a magician, or will you do it yourself? I'm not sure whether you can actually entertain the audience with a performance that is questionable. Also, can you attract people to come see your show if the ticket costs too much money? If it seems overpriced, then most people won't go, which is why it is something to consider on. On the brighter side, I believe that if everyone in your team actually does their parts, it will indeed look realistic to do. Good luck on your project!

We are commenting on your article for a class. We thought that your essay on this topic was well written. However, there were some minor concerns regarding how much of an alternative wind-turbines actually are over hydro-electricity. First of all, your idea on building a wall to reduce the sound pollution of wind-turbines is more complicated than you perceive due to the high costs associated with it. A wind-turbine is around 80-meter high. Consequently, the wall needs to be at least 80 meters as well. This will inevitably bring up the costs of material, design and personnel. Furthermore, if a wall is placed near a wind-turbine then the efficient of the turbine will decrease since no wind will reach it.

Just like what most of others said, this is relevant to many people, which consists of student's feeling anxious or depressed. I myself find sports a remedy in my life when it comes to the difficult obstacle I must overcome. Although this can be very pertinent in someone's life, you guys didn't go deep in the details of this project. It's vague and hard to understand what the outcome will be. I have some questions that could help the understanding and thoroughness:
1.How will you promote this encouragement towards playing sports?
2.Will this project be set up as creating teams?
3.Will someone help you fund this project?
4.How much will it cost?
5.If you're someone who needs a distresser, should you feel stress about trying this out?
6.If so, how will you make people feel comfortable getting out of their comfort zone whether or not it's with stress
These are just few things you need to consider. More information about it could help not only us critiques but the people you're encouraging, understand the purpose a bit better.
I'm interested in seeing the final results:)
