NewsActivist- Winter 2014
About this class
Each week, each student will post two news summaries and make several comments across classes in the network.
Each student will be doing personalized readings to encourage their potential volunteer work or academic research around the news they choose to write about during the semester.
We will be learning about people and organizations that have positively affected the news, be consdering how reading the news involves one's own background and location, and considering ways each individual can change the aspects of the world that she thinks need changing.
There are at least four other classes my students will be collaborating with during the semester, by giving and receiving feebdack on assignments shared at newsactivist:
SUNY Brockport- Intro to Sociology in Month 1
College of Westchester- Professional Communications and Career Development
SUNY Old Westbury- Entrepeneurship
SUNY Brockport- Social Theory
Course collaborations with SUNY Brockport students in Intro to Sociology will encourage awareness of locale influence on reading the news in the first month of the course. As students choose particular fields to focus on, collaboration with Professional Communications and Career Development courses at College of Westchester will enhance objective formal writing. Collaboration with Marianopolis College Print Journalism class will lead to better editorial writing and interview writing processes. Collaborative feedback with a SUNY Brockport Social Theory class in the third month of the course will enable productive project development for students. By the end of the semester, each student will have become engaged and knowledgable about an issue, and developed a way to write and act to improve it.

Your essay seems really interesting. I was personally attracted to your abstract because I have been doing my research on youth and how cyberbullying can result in depression so I was interested to see that you are working on a somewhat similar subject. I believe you chose interesting academic discipline that can be well related to the subject. Finally, since you make it more accessible to the subject, maybe it will have good repercussions on the population and will raise awareness.
I find it great that you are volunteering at the Children's hospital because it is a great place for children who need help. I have often worked very close to children with various jobs such as a camp councelor, so I know that it is very important or children to have a positive figure in their lives in their time of need. I don't know if you know this, but there is a Montreal Children's hospital Foundation to which you can donate to. I have done so many times with different organisations, and it brings joy to know that the money that you have accumulated is going to kids who need it. I hope you enjoy your volunteering experience and I look forward to reading your next post.
I strongly agree with what you are trying to say in your abstract. I believe that fighting a mental disorder with drugs only covers, or hides, the disorder and that no real help is given. Also, I believe that drugs for these disorders are over-prescribed, for example there has been a significant rise in treating ADD and ADHD children who are often not the case; they are simply doing what children do and giving them drugs that mess with their head is not the best solution in my opinion.
Your essay will be a very interesting read, your topic is unique and your style and flow is consistent throughout your abstract. I believe that your research was done with a genuine care to find out more about the LGBT community. Over the course of the semester I spent my time studying civil rights so I see just how important this issue is!
Nice piece! It was smooth and easy to understand! I thought your choice of topic was interesting because I'm from Quebec also and we're bombarded with this issue often. I think that your research was well done at it is evident you care about the topic. I spent the semester writing about civil rights so I can understand the importance of independence; if that is in fact what the people want.
After reading your abstract and looking through the articles you provided, it made me realise that there is in fact a problem with consumer rights. The government or companies should make us aware of these rights and placing more laws preventing people of getting hurt. The issue with your abstract though is that it is very vague and does not show any signs of your arguments.
Nicely done! You’re post is very well written. I like the way you introduced your volunteering with a brief introduction. I myself volunteered at a non profit organization as well as my final assignment too. I’m glad you had a good experience. It is great how you decided to help out the Aboriginals, we hear a lot about their problems on the news today!
Very clear and concise abstract! While not too lengthy, you managed to capture my interest, as I too am a daily user of the Internet. I definitely agree with the fact that cyberbullying is a prominent issue in today’s society, which we should all be aware of and try to find possible solutions in order to decrease its occurrence. I enjoyed how easy it was to see the interconnection between your three academic disciplines and three academic peer-reviewed journal articles. Although they are all interconnected, they are also somewhat different, which adds to the pertinence and accuracy of your work! Well done, it looks very interesting.
You have great writing style; everything was well defined! Being a Quebecer as well, I found your abstract tackling the cultural aspect of independence very interesting. The three articles you chose to summarize contribute to the completeness and clarity of your work! I found it fascinating to learn that through your research, independence seems to be an effective way to protect nations’, such as Quebec’s, culture, although I’d be curious to know if independence would have any political or economic consequences on Quebec. Overall, I enjoyed reading your abstract. Great work!
Wow! I really enjoyed reading your volunteering experience at the Old Mission Brewery. I like that you’ve integrated the links to your news articles and I find that your prezi is a great multimedia element, as it sums up your experience. I commend you on your proactiveness and you definitely incited me to look into this organization, as I do believe that homelessness is a complex societal issue that we have to address.
