Kaldor's Sociological Theory Spring 2014

About this class

Responding to issues they care about, students use social theories to develop change models.

Students in SUNY Brockport's SOC 300 will serve as change consultants for students at Champlain College St. Lambert taking Newsactivist - Winter 2014. As these students develop their own newsactivist projects, you will provide constructive feedback and even offer a theory of change that fits their proposed project.

Discovering how Durkheim still influences us today in a society where people are so selfish is inspiring. To see great students out in the community, thinking about people other than themselves, for once. With pizza, party, and fun, they all have the right idea to cheer up the minds of young ones. Although it cannot be easy, the work they put in must help them sleep a little easier each night.

Bullying is defined as the process of intimidating or mistreating somebody weaker or in a more vulnerable situation than yourself. There has been an increased number of media reports on the affects of bullying on LGBT teenagers, some of the most extreme cases of bullying have lead to suicide and other self harm in young people. Brian Koenig of the k12 association, and co-authors take a look at the affect of homophobic teasing on high school students. They also research what influence parents and school climate have on bullying.

Environmental awareness is becoming an increasing topic of study across all fields in todays ever-changing society. Many lawmakers believe that citizens simply do not care, do not have the knowledge, or do not want to change into a more sustainable society however, Lynn Rosentrater, a social scientist, presented research that tends to prove otherwise. Rosentrater (2013) conducted a survey of business and economics undergraduate students in June of 2009.

One of the top most controversial topics throughout America’s history is Abortion. There are six states in America that have chosen the path to prohibit pro-choice. Like I said throughout history having woman choose whether they want to keep their child or, in some words “kill” there child and it has been a very difficult decision for some people to make. This article states that woman’s right are being violated and that’s why most women fight it, in order to gain control of their rights.

This post caught my attention because the issue of depression and heart disease is universal. I hope to find a nonprofit organization that deals with depression and overall heart health.

A Theory of Change

Thank you so much for the great read. I will be looking into this organization further

Reply to: Men Can't Be Raped

Part of the problem is that as a society we are still clinging to some outdated and untrue characteristics of masculinity. People see a male rape victim as an anomaly when in fact statistics show that men make up 10% of all rape victims in our country. The number may be higher than that because the statistics are based on reported incidents of rape. There is help for male rape victims through a national organization called RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network) which is America's largest anti-sexual violence organization. I plan to look into this organization and using the theory of change see how it can improve its services to the people, both men and women, that need it.

I will also be doing research on this non-profit and reviewing and analyzing their theory of change.
