Neil Young was born in 1945 as a Canadian citizen, however, later moved to California in 1966 to pursue his musical career, where he became very well-known, but as time passed, people started to see that music was not the only subject on Young’s mind.  In early 2014, Young set out to raise awareness about the Athabasca Oil Sands in Alberta, and their negative effects to the citizens of Alberta and towards the environment.  The Honor the Treaties Tour soon began to get a lot of attention, both positive and negative.  Some say that the Athabasca Oil Sands in Alberta are killing fields, and sh

Neil Young’s “Honour the Treaties” tour has sparked much praise and rage from people with its involvement to stop the extraction of oil in the Athabasca Oil sands. Young had visited the territory of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nations to experience the impacts of the tar sands first hand. Not only would the tar sands pipeline affect the treaty rights of the First Nations, but it would also have major environmental and health impacts in the region. Neil Young has created a movement that has influenced many to be aware of the destruction the tar sands cause.

Neil Young and his “Honor the Treaties” tour have caused much controversy and major disputes with its involvement to stop the Athabasca Oil Sands from extracting oil from the first nation reserves. Methods to extract the tar sands from the native reserves are a huge threat to problems occurring such as: fish in the water streams, greenhouse gases, and the violation of treaties. Neil Young’s movement is beneficial because it is making people aware of the major destructions that the government is making in order to profit.
