Dr Decker's BIO 109 Human Biology FALL 2016

About this class

The main objective of this class is to educate you to become informed science citizens. We hope to enable you to decipher science information whether in a newspaper, science journal or on the news itself with the ability to distinguish anecdotal, misinformation and true science in order to make informed choices.  To that end the Final Project is to find an article that either expands on a topic covered in class or that speaks to you with your new found anatomy and physiology knowledge. We will flip jobs and you will become me!

                Your final assignment is to:

1. Find an article about a content topic from a well-known source about a covered content topic that interests, irks, astounds, appalls, and/or amazes you (link suggestions are on our class homepage in Blackboard. The internet is vast so there may be another source you find BUT it must be approved by me first). ARTICLES MUST BE APPROVED BY ME FIRST so we keep in tune with the course.

2. Write a 500 word summary of the article in laymen’s terms (so we can all understand what it’s discussing. That’s the objective of the course after all.). Make sure to include the following:

a. Explain why you chose this article. What is your reaction to the content of the article? Why did it catch your attention? Do you agree/disagree with its premise? How will this affect you, your family, and/or the world?

b. Ask a question (or two or three!) about the article. In other words, reach out for comments like I did. Examples: What else did it make you ask? Where else should the research go? How do you think this will affect the next generation? Etc etc.

c. SPELL CHECK, GRAMMAR CHECK AND THEN RECHECK!

3. Post your summary WITH A LINK TO THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE (so we all can read it) to the NewsActivist.com  site.

4. Comment to 1 of your classmates articles and respond to 1 of your classmates comments (the comments do not have to be to your particular article)

Pregnancy is one of the most valuable times in a growing baby’s life. It is within pregnancy that babies will begin to grow things such as finger nails all the way to things like their organs. I chose this article by about the under consumption by mothers during pregnancy leading to heart health issues in infants because although my career focus is not scientific, it is on infants and toddlers. They are so near and dear to my heart and their health is the most important aspect of their young life.

Great video, thanks for sharing! It's nice to have solid and accurate perspectives of people who were at the forefront of the gay rights movement. I completely agree that if "patient zero" was straight, the media would not have jumped to such harmful conclusions on that whole community.

Interesting topic Ella,
I agree with you that to an extent "it runs in the family" is an accurate statement. Chances are if you're brought up by drug users, at some point in time you will try some sort of drug. However yes, everyone is their own person and should be able to tell right from wrong. Coping skills are key. Just because you have been through hardships or have drug addicted parents doesn't men you should seek that for a way to "escape." You can't always blame the parents, but it is something to think about. Interesting read.

I find this extremely fascinating. Who ever would have guessed that hormones from sex could help with an addiction. It seems weird that its only for woman. I wonder if men were given female sex hormones would have the same affect on their addiction? There have been so many advances in technology that the natural things our bodies produce can be found useful for all types of physical or mental issues.
