This course will require students to think and write about the notion of community. What are the needs of a given community? What organizations are making a difference, and what work has yet to be done? How can an individual get involved in a meaningful way? Through our readings, we will explore relevant topics such as urban alienation, citizen engagement, online communities, and the role of the caregiver in the community.

The first part of a one-year writing sequence emphasizing the creation of clear, thoughtful prose linked to critical reading and the interpretation of the content, style and structure of essays. Seven or more essays are required, three of which will be written in class. One is a documented essay, which students must pass in order to pass the course.
