Discuss the organization:

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) is a voluntary organization in Canada that provides mental health services to hundreds of thousands of Canadians each year. Founded in 1918, it is the oldest organization of its kind in Canada. Through the combined efforts of more than 10000 volunteers and staff, CMHA promotes mental health in over 120 communities all across Canada. It helps educate people about mental health issues and supports the recovery of people experiencing mental illness. This is accomplished through education, research and various services.

1. Describe the services and link these services to mental health support

CMHA provides a wide range of services to mental health patients and their families. One of the main CMHA goals is to help people suffering from mental illness lead better, more productive lives. As such, the services on offer are designed to help people:

  • improve their mental health
  • integrate into the community
  • become more resilient
  • be supported in their recovery from mental illness.

There are a number of ways in which CMHA does this. CMHA’s programs help people with employment, housing, interventions for the youth, peer support, recreation services, stress reduction workshops and educational campaigns for the community. The CMHA also helps strengthen community mental health services and legislation and policies affecting these services, by acting as a social advocate.

2. Indicate to peers how one might provide charitable support for this organization.

(Perhaps through volunteering of time or through a donation.)

CMHA runs on volunteers and donations, both of which are viable options for providing charitable support to the organization. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the society, gain experience and skills and meet new people. There are many different opportunities for volunteering at CMHA and it could range from providing bereavement support to someone who has lost a loved one to mental illness, getting involved in fundraising, providing office support or working on special projects. CMHA volunteer positions are available to fit around any schedule; it could be a regular weekly or monthly commitment, or a one-time activity.
