Suicide among Veterans

by Zoe.Papadatos on September 11, 2013 - 11:22am

Veteran suicides outnumber US military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every year, suicide rates in veterans increase. In 2007, 17 veterans committed suicide every day on average. In 2010, those rates increase to 22 veterans each day, according to Veterans Affairs.

An article by NBC news informs that VA has released reports of increasing suicide rates among veterans. A non-profit advocacy group, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans of America, says that the nation should be outraged by these standards. They say that the government should be making an effort to provide better mental health care to veterans (and other people alike) in need.

I find that these statistics show how little the government cares for its people. Everything seems to be about profit and self-interest. Why else would they send these men and woman to fight in a war and then abandon the survivors? The US spends more on the military than the next 15 countries combined! Obviously, they can afford to provide veterans with mental health care, so why don’t they?

I absolutely agree with you. I think that the suicide rate is that high among veterans because of the bad experience they’ve had in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also, I found that the psychological damage causes the suicide of the veterans. Like when one of the soldier together with you, dies in front of you. I mean it can be really shocking for the people who has experienced this kind of situation. I do believe that the United States will do something to stop the suicides. Like you mentioned, by giving them a special psychological treatment would be a good start. It is absolutely not normal that the suicides rate are higher than the one who actually died during combat.

Yes I Agree with you, it is very sad that it comes to this point that veterans resort to suicide as a form of escape. I also believe
that the US should do more to help the veterans once they come back from overseas like jobs and psychological treatment.

I agree with what you say. The suicide rate is very high among veterans because of what they see during the war. It must be shocking to see your friends die next to you and all the other horrible scenes. The United States should care a bit moer for their veterans and not only focus on the military part. Hopefully the next President will focus more on the awareness and new efforts to investigate verteran suicide so they will have greater access to mental health services. They should also make sure that if they take such procedures that the verterans have the care they need as soon as they come back and not 10 years later when it's too late.

I agree with you 100%. It's sad how veterans aren't getting the treatment they deserve these people fought for their country, put their lives on the line for their country. America might not be where it is today without the people that risked their lives and everything they have for their country. They deserve more attention than they are getting. A couple of months ago i was watching the news and the soldier that shot Osama Bin Laden is currently unemployed, no wonder Veterans are committing suicide. I think every soldier that fought and risked his life for his country is a hero but apparently the American government disagrees with me.

i agree with what you are saying because many war veterans get psychologically effected from what they see in wars, which eventually leads them to a mental health such as depression. They also don't get the help they need and therefore they commit suicide.
