Women now comprise 52% of gamers

When gaming is mentionned, one of the first things that come into people's mind is "boys" or "guys". That should no longer be the case though, because a a study revealed that 52% of gamers are now women. The trope of video games being for guys is outdated, since the majority of the gamers now consists of girls. This new wave of female gamers came with the appearance of games on smart phones, as it made playing casual games much more accessible.

There is a debate going on with those games though, as some would argue that those types of games are not "real" games. Gamers who have been playing for several years, since before the creation of smartphones, usually don't consider these new types of time passing games as a "traditional" or "real" game. It is an interesting subject, but not the one for today. The point is, more and more women are taking interest in games, in any way, shape or form. People should no longer affiliate games with only men as they are no longer the majority of the player base in gaming.

Hello, I am replying to your post today because your title caught my attention since I am one of this 52%. I agree with you that it is unfair that people relate gaming to a guys’ activity when it fact it doesn’t matter what gender plays video games. It does not make a girl more of a man if she plays. I love playing GTA and actually my boyfriend thinks it’s cute. I thought that men liked girls who play video games? But I guess there is still more discrimination on this subject than I thought. Women should not stop playing what they like just because it does not conform to the norms. There is a lot of stereotypes related to women, such as they have to play dolls and Barbies when they are young then they are not considered real girls. This stereotype is not true and most of the other stereotypes are not true as well. In my opinion, more people should be open minded on this subject because this is as bad as a girl riding a bike, is it not? What do you think?

I have to agree with you on this one as I have noticed many games have multiple guy characters to choose from while girls may have one or none at all. This is very surprising as I have met so many " girl gamer's " that it simply intrigues me as to why there would only be guy characters to choose from. It is blatantly unfair to girls as guy's are usually the main point of attention for games as they try to grasp the guys into the game by making the main characters male. I have witnessed discrimination in gaming towards women a lot as I have seen people saying to other people that they "suck and play like a girl", but when did playing a game require a certain gender.
