Question 7: How do historical films affect and construct our understanding of history and historical events? For this question, you may want to choose a specific film and discuss the broader nature of the event(s) it is trying to present.

Some people tend to think that studying and reading books are the most beneficial ways, however, in my opinion, watching films is the most beneficial way to construct our understanding of history and historical events because of the following reasons: the idea that watching films gives us an overview of history and historical events to understand them, the fact that I found watching films is definitely the best way to learn history through doing my History on Film Assignment, and the fact that watching films made me think that I have to make my future children watch historical films as a form of entertainment when I get older.

The first reason, the idea that watching films gives us an overview of history and historical events to understand them, is based on the process of myself doing History on Film Assignment. When I watched the films which I chose for the assignment, I was so overwhelmed by the fact that there were more facts which I did not know than the ones which I already knew about the blacks in the U.S in 20th century. The film which surprised me the most was the one, “I am not your negro.” This film broke my every insufficient knowledge about blacks and slavery.

The second reason, the fact that I found watching films is definitely the best way to learn history through doing my History on Film Assignment, is based also on my process of doing the assignment. I had doubt whether watching films is the best way or not, however, doing the assignment finally convinced me that watching films is the most sufficient way to construct our understanding of history and historical events because watching films is one of the ways to learn history, and every person has his/her own way and the best one. As for me, watching films is the best way because I learned most of black history mostly through watching films the way I did on the assignment, and I found it was the best way rather than read the books which contain too many details.

The third reason, the fact that watching films made me think that I have to make my future children watch historical films as a form of entertainment when I get older is based on the fact that there is some time when I thought about how I educate my future children. I think that most children do not like studying, and they read books only about old tales. However, if I watch historical films with my future children in the future, they can obtain at least an overview of a specific history, and I think that this is a great idea to educate my future children who probably do not like to study with books.

In conclusion, historical films construct our understanding of history and historical events because of the facts that films give us an overview of history, watching films is the best way for me to study history, and making future children watch historical films is a great way to educate them. I am so grateful that there are a lot of opportunities to watch historical films including this course.

I really like the points you have made about how your understanding of historical events has been stronger since you were able to see the historical events actually portrayed in the film. I agree with you that film is a really effective way of teaching about historical events. However, I think is important to note and remember that there are some films that are extremely historically inaccurate or films that really misrepresent facts about historical events. This is why I think it is a good idea to keep an open mind when watching historical dramas/ or historical films, but keep in mind to be aware that the events being portrayed may not be entirely accurate.
